'96 Wildcat Mt Cat Help

Last year a guy brought me his sled to fix. The chaincase was FUBAR when I got it the first time. I think it was shifted into reverse while the sled was moving forward, because things that shouldn't have broken were in several pieces. I replaced all of the parts I thought I needed to replace and had it working, so I put it back together and he took it back. They said they rode it for a while again and now the reverse doesn't work. I guess it seems like the sprocket inside isn't moving far enough and is getting hung up on one of the idler gears. I've tried to fix it but am out of ideas. Any help is much appreciated. Sled is a '96 AC Wildcat Mt Cat, with reverse obviously. I have a Clymer manual and know the chaincase section front to back now, and still can't figure out what's going on.

If you look at the bottom gears, the large one has little dogs and the other has holes they go into! Most likely the holes are egged out.

Yes, they were egged out. Would that alone cause so many issues with the system? Like I said, things I wouldn't have thought should break were broken. All sprockets were fine with no damage somehow, but those holes in the larger (as in diameter) sprocket were egged pretty good.

Yep those dogs engage and are for forword, not rev!

But the forward still works, but reverse does not?

I tried that several times. I've tried moving the system by hand to eliminate the linkage problem and it's the same thing every time. Seems like the gears on the larger diameter sprocket and the outside "idler" sprocket are misaligned, even though I have a brand new one of those rubbery alignment pins in there. I've tried everything I can think of and then some and just can't figure this thing out.

Which shim are you talking about exactly? I have the ones I know of in place where I think they should go according to the manual, but those washers and such can be tricky to find on the diagram.
