Insurance question?
It's finally time to get the citation on the trails i've been looking at insurance companies but i still don't know what one would be cheaper ... none would give a quote for me. but how much do you think i would probibly be paying to put just the minimum insurance to get my 1980 citation 277 on the trails.
What company would be cheaper?

I called all over and found TD Primmum to be the cheapest in this area, for my sleds, liability only, 180 each.

i phoned around today and most places would not take me for stand alone insurance.....i got 2 quotes though. 1.) was 426 a year and the other was 325 a year. This seems to be WAY TOO much.
Most of my buddies have there sleds insured through there parents and are not paying over 200 for newer MXZ's and ZRT's. Do i have to have the sled in grandfauthers name for him to be ableto insure it?
Thanks TREVOR,

In Ontario, I pay $150 a year to RBC Insurance for one million 3rd party liability. Of course I only pay 1/2 of that as I cancel my coverage every spring.

If it's only liability it's about $100 per sled here.

Does your state require insurance. I know it's good to have but we don't have to have it here.

Insurance costs depends on where you live, the type of sled and your age. Most insurers will not write stand alone snowmobiles so you have to insure it with your car insurance company. (Snowmobile insurance is mostly a money loser for the insurance companies)
To those who cancel their insurance half way through the year... you're wasting your time and not saving any money. Snowmobile premiums are earned over the winter months, same as a motorcylcle premiums are earned over the summer months.
The insurance company issues an annual policy so you can avoid the hassle of having to reapply every year. However, if you take out a policy in October and cancel it in April, there will be no return premium even though you think you have paid for a "year". You actually are paying for a season. Note that this does not apply to Comprehensive (Fire and Theft) coverage. This portion of the premium DOES apply all year long as the coverage is needed even in the summer. (Your home insurance will not cover your sled even if it's in your garage when the garage burns)
ps. I'm an Insurance broker in Canada so I know these rules apply in Canada. I can't speak for the US but I know some American brokers and can find out from them if the same rules apply (though I'm pretty sure that they do)
If you have any other insurance questions, fire away and I'll try to answer them for you.

I don't know who you represent, but I get a credit on my policy ever spring when I cancel my liability insurance.

I'm a broker so I represent many companies. I can't be positive about the rules in the US as my business is in Canada. I'll check with my US associates to see what the difference is.
In Canada, the insurers are aware that liability is not needed in the summer months so there is no point in charging for it. That's why the premiums are all earned over the winter months only.

Allstate will suspend your policy in the summer months. There was a time though they decided not to write anymore policys, but if you already had one in force they would continue to carry you. I didn`t want to go through missing out on the very cheap price so I keep mine in force. My price stayed the same even after my boy totalled a sled that was 2 years old but only had 200 miles on it. They compensated almost the price I paid for it off the showroom floor. I don`t know how you can beat allstate.

TD Primmum will insure sleds without having other vehicles insured with them, Allstate was twice the price when I called them. They have my policy on off road motorcycle but were way too high on the sleds.

I know the guy who paid 2000 for his sled last week, brought it up to Indian River, then it caught on fire and burnt to the ground wishes he had insurance...i,d never ride without it. I pay 12 bucks a month for my 98 and 25 a month for the 2009.

Uninsured motorists- $25,000/person $50,000/accident
Liability,bodily injury-$25,000/person $50,000/occurrence
Auto Comprehensive-actual cash value less $100.00 deductible
property damage- $25,000/occurrence
these are minimum required coverages if you ride in VT.
I don`t want to argue about prices but I keep hearing horror stories of guys going to Canada with their large towing vehicles, large enclosed trailers w/multiple sleds being stolen in a matter of seconds as you stop to eat or whatever. We all know ins. companies do their homework and find some people at a much higher risk levels, and age along with driving records help them determine premiums.

$43.00 per sled, per year for liability. Here in Maine we are not required by law to have it but seeing as how I finally paid off the mortgage on my house I'll be damned if I'm going to lose it. I was quoted some outrageous prices, then the woman at the Ins. Co. checked into it and I was able to get the sleds attached to my homeowners now ALL my friends and I do it that way. Call and ask if its possible to have it attached, you'll have a hard time beating the price.
