Not quite pre 1980 but I had a 1987 Polaris Indy Sport 340 that did just over 70 mph on one -33C morning. It only happened once and the sled would only do 65mph tops on regular days.

Man, the only way my 340 would hit 70mph is if I tossed it off a cliff.....I'd like to see the radar if its stock.

Ya, I was pretty surprised as well. This was about 15 years ago and I was only reading off the speedo so it might have been off a bit. It was really cold so the engine was running lean and fast. I tried a few more times to get it up that fast again in warmer temps with no luck.

Had my 1980 TX-L Indy up to 50-55mph and ran out of room. Pretty sure it has few more mph's in it. Got to 50 awful fast though, old sled pulls like a champ!

I believe you man, the 340 was quite the sled for only 340cc's. We had ours up to 65 on the dam, they are so well built

I am thinking of buying a 79 Yamaha 250 also... The only predicament is I am a bigger guy. I am about 6'4 260lbs. Will it still run okay and go a decent speed?

Is it free? Don't expect it to be anything more than a yard toy.....

its a good sled to keep in your backpack for when you are out on a bigger sled!

Seriously though, no... You won't be happy with that.

0, never rode one.

I did have a 1980 Yamaha SRX 440 that ran well and was good looking sled IMO. Not sure how fast it would actually go, speedometer read over 90 a few times just before it would eat another belt. It ran OK but bigger sleds soon returned it to toy status!
