My new sled

I bought a 2000 yamaha vmax 500 about a month ago for $1800. It has electric start, reverse and it pretty clean with about 2500 miles. It has been rebuilt once. I have no idea why but my mechanic told me that it had been. That scares me a little bit. Are these reliable? Should I be worried?

yeah these sleds are usually very reliable and you payed a low price for one! it has nice, welcomed bonuses too like reverse and e-start. having it rebuilt so early does worry me, but whatever was wrong is hopefully fixed!

Well what is the point of a top end rebuild? Is it like a "do it early and be safe or something major might break thing" or a "let it go until something goes" type of thing?

I don't know the exact technical means of it, but I do know that they're done when a sled's performance dwindles because of low compression in the cylinders. This snowmobile has 3 to worry about.

It's called "preventive maintenance"!

No, my sled only has twins. I did put a video on youtube of me starting it but it doesn't really show the sled. It's been waxed about a million times and I hope to get some paint for the foot boards. Here is the link to the video:

o I though the vmax was triple mustve been mistaken. Either way the rebuild can't hurt you! Sounded real nice.

Sleds have rebuilds left and right for many reasons. I can't find any thing about recalls on this model so you should be all set. If anything I'd be happy that it got a rebuild, just saves you the trouble. When it comes to reliability, yammys can NOT be beat. There's no way you got this from a dealer though, right?

ha why is there no way I got it from a dealer? I actually bought it from a guy who buys them from the dealers. Like he probably bought this one at a Polaris or Ski doo dealer for cheap, and then made the money off of me!

Yes but up there sleds last a long time! To everyone else...I am still concerned that it was rebuilt so early. Did it need to be?

Then there may be something wrong with it, a dealer wouldn't sell it for the low of a price after a recent rebuild.

Hmm yeah. The guy bought it during the summer for one reason, he bought it from a dealer that didn't want a yamaha...probably a polaris dealer or something, and it needed just maintenance work like new belt, carbs cleaned etc. I ended up spending $250 at the mechanic just for basic stuff but nothing was wrong with it and compression was fine-118 or something. So really I ended up paying $2050 for the sled which books for $1800 in perfect condition. The guy probably didn't make too much off of it but maybe a couple of hundred dollars. And there is a scratch in the windshield and a slightly bent bumper, a small rip in the seat which can be easily fixed but I don't think I got a great deal on it. I could've bought if for less since it needed belt, plugs and stuff but it's no big deal. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Actually, a fresh rebuilt engine will read low until the rings are seated properly.
So, that is not too far off the mark. Test it again when you have run a tank full of gas through it.
