Plastic Skis

Hey all,
I'm a newbie to snowmobiling and was wondering what the advantage is to have plastic instead of metal skis. The 1997 SkiDoo Formula S i bought has metal and someone told me to get plastic?? Not sure why.....

The only disadvantages are cost and durability on rough terrain.
