Shipping a sled?
I have a offer to buy a sled. The problem is the sled is in Canada and I am in Iowa. The seller has told me he will pay shipping. Can I buy this sled through COD only. How do I protect myself? I am sure there is fees for stuff coming into the states? What company is legit to ship a snowmobile from Canada to the states? I would want to check out the sled before I buy it! I would hope that I can pick up the sled at a location after I test drive it and check it out.
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Kirk

Sounds like a scam, but then again, if you do COD and it is crap, etc... you don't have to pay and you are out nada.... I would in no way send any money to him. Maybe he owns a shipping company, or drives truck... never know.

I will not be sending him any money until I have the sled and can test it out. I would just like to know if there is a legit compnay that I can tell him to ship through and I will pay for the sled when it gets to me. I don't think UPS ships from Canada to the states.
It does sound like a scam, but you never know until they say that they are not going to ship it C.O.D.

Scam!!!!
I will explain you how the deal will be closed in good terms: The financial part of this deal will be managed by ebay in this way we will both be protected. They are acting like a third party in this deal. They will keep payment until you receive the sled, and have it tested. ebay will send you the payment invoice. You will then have to send payment like is stated in invoice, they will contact me if the payment is cleared to ship you the sled. They will not release payment to me until you'll receive the sled, inspect it, and gave your approval for buying.
Also, in case you do not like it or you are not 100% satisfied (though I can assure you that this won't be the case), they will refund you the payment amount.
If you want to proceed I will need: Your full name, shipping address and phone number required by the Shipping company (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day prior to arrival)
Let me know if you agree.
Thanks
James

NO NO NO STOP!!!!! This is a scam. Trust me, Its a scam
they will use your name that you send them (name in full address etc) a criminal scumbag can use that information to steal your identity. This is the oldest scam in the book. Guys COME ON! don't ever buy something you can't see, touch and drive before you give any money or information for it. I can not warn you enough, you will never see the sled...it doesn't exist. The minute you send him your name and personal info, he can access your PayPal account, Money Mart Account...anything....
I am a Police Officer and we see this everyday, all day......buy in Person PLEASE

...carrying on from my last post. Here is a similar scam. You find a sled you reallt like on Craigslist or Kijiji. You respond asking some questions because the price is so good. You are told that the sled is far away (California, Alaska...whatever) The seller tells you that he will ship you the sled at no cost to you....you will receive the sled and have a chance to ride it, wax it, kiss it..whatever you want. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO is wire money to the name of a friend of yours...pick your best friends name and wire the money. The seller will ship the sled, you tell him what your friends name is, and once you receive the sled and you love it....you just call Money Mart and switch the name of the receiver from your best friends name to the shippers name and ...VOILA' !! the sled is yours
Problem is....no snowmobile ever existed (It was just a random internet picture you saw on Kijiji or Craigslist) and you just allowed a criminal to make identification in the name of your best friend to get your money that you wired. Believe me from my experience. If it SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE...It Is.
Enjoy shopping for your sleds guys, but be smart and buy in person.

Similar scam:
"Sled for sale, moved to Florida for work. I paid $300 extra to the shipping company to hold the sled and ship to anywhere in North America. If you buy it, I'll ship to you for free, just send money."
Stay away!

Why anyone would want to buy a sled from Canada and have to go thru Importation and shipping is beyond me, when there are so many sleds for sale here in the States. Must be one hell'va deal to do that. The current rate (money) of exchange is nil. Call US Customs and they will tell you what it takes if you are really serious about it. Who pays for return shipping if you don't like the sled? Then again there is the problem of importation back to Canada.

I have been the victom in 1 of these E-bay scams for a gas powered paint sprayer. Everything looked legit and I thought it was a deal and turned out I lost $1800.00. DON'T, do it. See it, feel it, smell it, taste it, or don't buy it.

This is really very simple! Just tell him you will just get in your pick up and come check it out and pay him cash for it, as long as he has the correct paper work and it's not stollen!
But I agree why, all sleds there are more expencive than here!
