I was riding today, and missing past 7ish rpm like usual. As the day went on it started missing more and more, at times even below 7k. I was going though a feild and could feel it missing and backfiring pretty bad, and this is when an exhaust pipe blew off - the pto...i put the pipe back on and was on my way. Later, I checked the plugs after doing a 100 yard wot run and killing the engine at about 7k. The mag and center looked fine, but the pto was black as can be and wet. I havent done a comp test yet, but I think the problem was involved with fuel delivery.

I would guess ignition related, probably not burning the fuel in that cylinder. That or yes fuel related, that cylinder may be getting too much fuel. I would clean carbs real good and check all components such as needle and seat, if that doesnt help move on to ignition. Dont keep driving it with it backfiring.

srx 700 response

Hi I have owned the same sled for years. Up till two yrs ago I used to foul plugs constantly. I took it to a mechanic at a different dealership and have the same plugs in there for two seasons now. He told me to switch to BR9EYA. They seem to be much better than the ecs ones. Hope that helps.

The plugs aren't really fouling at all, just the one cylinder that is misfiring, and today is actually the first time I could get that plug to read anything different.

So my first move should prob be to go though the carbs? Does anyone know where i can find a shop manual online? Even if I need to pay a few dollars thats ok.

Bump, about a year later.

I never got this issue solved last year. Is it likely that the coil could be causing the problem? It starts missing after being warmed up. I think its the cylinder having too much gas. Its either getting loaded with fuel, or missig spark. I don't think a lean condition would cause a backfire.

Sounds like either a coil issue or a stator issue. Make sure all of your electrical connections are clean and tight. If you have a coil issue, usually what you'll see (On a triple) is one plug will be nice and bright blue and the other 2 will have weaker spark. Find another set of coils and swap them out to try it.

I had the same types of problems with my 700 vmax a couple years ago and someone on this forum helped me find the problem. Unscrew the spark plug caps from the wires the cap that snaps onto your spark plugs then take a multi meter and read resistance through the caps. there is a resister in the cap and it goes bad causing the sled to misfire. I dont remember the reading but compare them to each other and you will more than likely find that one has high resistance and the other two do not.

I just changed out all three for like 40 bucks from the dealer and havent had a problem since. Hope this helps because it was driving me nuts trying to find the issue! If you have any trouble testing them just pm me and I can check the readings on my old ones as I kept the two that still showed good.

ok thanks. I'm gonna change the coil on the cylinder that was missing and hope thats it. It just sucks that I have to wait until we get snow to test.

I think your wasting time and money changing the whole coil out just unscrew the spark plug caps and check the cap itself with a multimeter a good cap will show almost closed with maybe a slight amount of resistance a bad cap will show open or very close to open its pretty easy to tell a good from a bad. the dealer sells the caps seperately and if your buying a new coil you wont get a new cap and will probably just transfer your problem to the new coil.

I know it sounds strange that a simple thing like a spark plug cap can cause this problem but your symptoms sound just like my sled was doing and changing the caps solved it completely.
