Question white plugs

2003 vertical escape 800.

Sled runs great at highier elevation, i ended up taking down to a lower elevation( sea level) and the denations light had started to flash. I ended up shutting her down and started to remove the plugs, to my surprise they were white.

I only run premium fuel and i use ngk iridium plugs..

Will the lower elevation lean her out that much...

Thanx

I know you have to rejet for high altitudes so yes, if your plugs are white you are definitely running lean.

When you go to lower elevations, the air is denser. Dense air requires more fuel to make the same oxygen/fuel ratio. Going lower without rejetting will make a lean burn.

Same thing happens when it gets colder. Air again is denser, same drill. Going higher and hotter requires less fuel, going lower and colder requires more fuel.

Check the jetting chart for your sled and jet for the proper elevation/temp and you will be good to go

This guy knows exactly what he's talking about. Btw, does that light your talking about have anything to do with the premium gas and it running lean or?

On the Edges with the Det sensor, (the 2003 VE was first) the light on the dash blinks if the sensor detects detonation (and retards the timing).

I don't think it's the plug if it's the same heat range specified by Polaris. Are you running premium fuel? Was the key on the premium setting or on regular? If it was on premium, turning the key to the regular setting should make the light stop flashing. Most detonation is caused by gas that does not have a high enough octane rating, if you got some bad gas, that can cause detonation as well. I have found that premium fuel is pretty hit and miss, especially when the prices were up. The premium fuel sits a lot longer in the gas station tank before it's sold, so it is at times not as fresh.

If it's just an intermittant flashing once in a while under hard acceleration, it's probably not going to hurt anything, as the timing is also retarded to get rid of the det. If it's all the time, you may have more troubleshooting to do...

Thanx again, New question. This detonation light comes on when i grab a handful as i climb in altitude, i understand how it works, it ends up retarding the the moment it senses detonation. The question i guess im askin is, Why?. Why is it detonating, is it the temp sensor, crap fuel or just a short in the wiring. Its not like it craps out or anything, she runs great even when the light is blinkin. Ive asked polaris they dont have clue, any bit of info is most appreciated....

will this sled use a knock sensor or will it recieve crankref. signals to verify detonation and missfire data?

The det sensor is acoustic, it hears the knock. If I remember, it has to hear 3 in a row before it starts retarding the timing. If I remember right, the sensor is under the thermostat, there should be a wire going to the temp sensor on the top and another wire going to the det. sensor on the bottom. You may have a sensor that is a problem, but it could be bad gas too. Try running the key in the regular setting and see if the det goes away. That should rule out the sensor...

Try jetting up and see if that stops it too! Be very carefull, white plugs means a melt down!
