Question Riding on packed snow.

I took my son out riding this morning. The snow was hard with a thin layer of ice. The antifreeze coolers under the foot rests were warm like usual. There was no snow kicking up to cool them. I periodically wiped snow on them. I stopped riding early because I was afraid of overheating or burning up hyfax. Is this a concern when there is no loose snow around? Or was I just being paranoid?

what were you riding? theres probably a heat exhanger behind the track underneath the tail light, if thats the case them im sure bunch of snow was getting kicked up to that, no worries if no temp lights came on and everything seemed normal

Yes,in the front of the track. The front one was covered w/ snow. The sides were smoking a little. Isn't that how the trails are? Packed tightly?

Usually yes, if well groomed and rode on, usually what I try to do is every now and then hit the sides a little just a little curve on the side to get some fresh snow thrown up on the exchangers.

As the track spins it kicks up the snow on them, On really hard pack or ice it helps to hit the side a little and get some fluffy powder up there.

Thanks. I think I made the right choice by leaving. I could not find any powder. There is always tomorrow.

If this is going to be a normal occurance, you should look at adding ice scratchers on the rails. It's not as important for a trail sled with a shorter lug, but us mountain guys can go through hyfax in a quick hurry riding those icy trails. The scratchers throw up enough ice that the chips hit the heat exchanger and end up in the track to provide lubrication and cooling for the hyfax. It's REALLY critical when you have a 2" or greater lug on your track.

As long as the high temp light didnt come on, you didnt hurt the engine and with the short lugs that your Indy 500 has, I wouldnt be worried about burning up the hyfax.
