need help with slection of a helmet
so the deal is last season i rode with my buddies sled helmet that was not heated or any of that jazz, it was just a very basic full face helmet with a plastic ( i think) visor that wasent an anti fog one, anyways every time i went out it was about minus 30 to minus 40(celsius) out and not matter what i did the wind screen or viser or whatever you want to call it fogged up on me and then froze because of the condensation from my breath and i could not lift it because i could not see anything with the wind in my eyes, i also have a motocross helmet but was scared of using it and freezing my ears off, so basicaly since i am a nooby i was wondering if anyone has any tips on what i should buy helmet wise or if i could just set up my motocross helmet with proper goggles and balaclava (And if so what kind of goggles and balaclava)
-thanks
john

I use a modular helmet with a heated shield. It's about a $130 investment or so, but WELL worth it.

I ride with a skidoo modular, it has the big fighter pilot mouth piece, it's never fogged. I have also ridden with my motor cross helmet and goggles. The trick to this is matching the goggles to the helmet opening so there are no air leaks.
Heated shields are nice but I haven't needed one.

I agree a heated shield works great pretty much all conditions you will encounter. . .
It takes getting used to being "plugged in" though; my wife says that I look like a dog who forgets he's on a leash when I get off the sled and try to walk away!

I bought a new HJC helmet a few years ago and it worked OK, but if it got really cold, the visor would freeze up. I've been debating on either going with a full modular or with a moto-X helmet and goggles. I've got an awesome pair of Smith goggles that I use for snowboarding that should work perfect, but like mentioned earlier, they must fit the helmet or you'll freeze your face. I ride with a few guys that have moto-X gear and love it. I also ride with one guy that has a non-heated modular and he prefers that over anything. He said he has never needed a heated visor.

If I run into that problem, I just crack mine open a 1/4 inch.

put liquid dish soap on your shield. it stops fogging. test it out in the bathroom on a mirror when you take a shower.

If you are buying a new helmet, make sure the visor is double pane and not single pane. The double pane helps to reduce condensation on the inside of the face shield. Make sure the helmet has a lot of adjustable ventillation holes, I crack my visor open when I ride slow or at stop signs so it doesn't fog up.
