I think it was how you were holding your mouth. That happens to me sometimes

I did cross my fingers.

Seriously, someone told me not to use the electric start, so I did and it worked. Do you think this makes a difference?

I don't... The only thing it may do is allow you to get a bigger pull vs. the small cranks with a starter. When I run my sled, I usually do it early or later at night so it is cooler. I'll even run it outside when it is raining.

My sled is so dusty right now, I need it to snow so I can take it through a few drifts and clean it!

Could be you are getting a faster pull when you use the rope, which may create more voltage to the coils, thus a hotter spark. Just a guess.
