Electric snowmobiles

Anyone considered this yet? I think it's feasible and would perform awesome. Electric motors have a perfectly flat torque curve (they make the same amount of torque at 1 rpm as they do at 20,000), imagine the wheelies you could do!

I've got so many ideas floating in my head about this. Anybody wanna discuss/bluesky/bullshit about electric snowmobile ideas? I'm kinda bored.

There would still be sound wouldnt there? I've never heard a silent electric motor and think of all the track noise too. It would be nice not to have to buy gas! And oil for that matter too. Maybe some day.

The one problem with electric snowmobiles is the cold. Think about how much the cold weaken's a battery that is merely used to start an engine.
Now think about what that cold would do to a battery that is used as the primary power source for an electric engine.

Here is a link to a electric drag bike. A buddy sent me the video last week. KillaCycle - World’s Quickest Electric Motorcycle Listen to it when you play the video

That's a good point. Maybe you could use an oil-pan heater for trucks and plug your sled in at night, and then it'll be warm and usable the next morning? The battery will stay warm while you're using it from discharging.

I imagine it would possibly be lighter and more compact than a gasoline engine, while being more powerful? Can you handle a Phazer-sized body with 130 hp, while running 80 miles on a charge, and each charge costing about 10 bucks in electricity? That would be SICK. I'm tired of paying 4.50 a gallon here.

Hydrogen fuel cell power source for the electric motor.
Cold won't bother it then.

sorry to burst your bubble guys but I saw an electric sled on t.v. about 2 months ago and it was really unimpressive. It was a university team that built it, they put a 15 hp electric engine in a ski-doo freestyle chassis, and put lithium ion batteries under the seat. It only had a top speed of 20 kms and a max distance of 70kms, and with all the batteries it needed it weighed more than a regular gas freestyle. I agree with you guys that if you could perfect this type of power for a sled it would be prety awsome, but this one failed to impress me much.

I think you just explained why it was terrible. They need lithium polymer batteries and a 100 hp motor, then it would rip. They have electric cars with in-wheel 150 hp motors (so the car has something like 600 hp with all 4 motors running) , so I think they could easily make a compact engine-sized 100 hp motor.

that would be weird not having a motor in your sled i couldnt get used to it. anyways on the sound part i race remote control cars and electric motors are NOT silent and mabye not the answer to altrenative fuel

Actually, the motor is silent. The sound you are hearing is the drive train gears.
An oil bath transmission or a centrifugal clutch set up would be nearly silent. The only sound would be the track and idlers.

ok, i have had first hand experience with this. looking around for colleges, and was at the UW madison on monday. went on a tour of the engineering campus, and guess what was in the shop? an electric snowmobile! they build then and compete in the "clean snowmobile challenge" against other universities. they won this year, btw.

anyways, heres the specs on the sled= they took an electric car motor and crammed it into the engine bay of a polaris dragon. space is obviously an issue. it is powered by 80 battery packs exactly like the ones that power electric drills. the guys said it could only be beat in a race by a 600cc gas sled. however, it only has a range of +/- 10miles!! they also said it could be made to go longer with the long track models-because of the extended seat capability, but they were limited by competition rules. the sled looked extremely heavy however, but it was obviously pretty fast. it was also not studded!

the sled is going to greenland to be tested by scientists who take ice samples, and they can only use an electric sled because the gas corrupts the data from the ice. so we'll see how it works there. also, because this competition is every year, it should only get better. also, because i am 99% going to madison, i may very well be on that team in a year!! or i might be on the all terrain vehicle team. the atv (it was more like a dune buggy) they built this year was amphibeous, it had a ~660cc motor and just drove over the water with full power, like water skipping essentially. this is all done during the students spare time but this is also where many advancements come to many industries=atv's, formula racers, off-road trucks, etc.

thanks!

im probably going to become a mechanical engineer and design snowmobiles, or atvs, or jetskis. something like that, or find new ways to improve internal combustion engines, design cars, trucks, etc.. that would be my dream.
