Modern 600 are pushing at least 105+hp while a z570(comparable to a doo fan engine) is pushing 60-70hp I beleive. On top of that the 600 can be tweeked to fly! 600 is what you probly want...

So I'm back up in MI riding a different rental sled. I thought I asked every possible question I could when I was calling to check out sleds, but I should have asked it the sled was liquid. Have a 440 fan motor. So much for fan vs liquid comparison. This sled is not set up well, it lifts a ski under hard acceleration, and with the icy conditions up here, it’s a real pain in the buns to ride. Not as fast as the skidoo, but the ride is better. (the SD was a 100cc bigger)

Anyway, ran into a guy up here who has a 2003 ZL550 Arctic Cat. He wants $1200 for it. Has 4500 miles. Pull start, no reverse. It will need a new hood, he hit deer with it and the hood is cracked at the hinges. Other then the hood, looked good. Tempting .. ..?!

Any thoughts?

It's Flippin' COLD up here tonight!!

Not a bad sled but once again old thechnology. The fuel economy, power are all in the past IMO. I find it wiered that they brought the 550 back I guess to get rid of surplus parts. If you don't mind the lack of fuel economy and power compared to the 600 go ahead.

Thanks for the info! I just assumed it was the same technology as the 600. So, yea I passed. I'm in Indiana, so MN is a little far for me to go to look at one sled. Lots of folks have mentioned the rav by Skidoo, but after skipping the first 2 years, that's more then I want to spend for a first sled.

I also want to ride a Polaris, if nothing else to just see what many are so fired up about. My time to head up to 'snow regions' is getting scarce for the next several weeks and everyone's helpful comments drives home that I have a lot to learn!

You should be able to get into an '03 REV 600 for around 3K? They had ring issues but as long as they have already been replaced (which by now they probably have) it's a great sled. Pretty certain the "03 600 was pushing about 120hp.Btw, don't know if you noticed but I only live maybe 20-30 minutes from you.

Hey Jarger, I noticed you are from 'historic' Farmland! Yea, I dunno. I guess for my first sled I'm not wanting to spend that much. That could change, but I'm not going to shell out that kind of $$ in the off-season. I need to pick up another jet ski this summer, and honestly, the snow in Indiana sucks, so adding up trips to to MI to ride all season is part of the equation. Put it all together and the cost of entry needs to be resnable.

That's understandable and yea, the winters here do suck anymore. I will keep you in mind if I see anything good come along and let you know. I have a couple of buddies who may be looking to upgrade for next season. One has a '93 Polaris 580 XLT SKS and the other is a '98 Arctic Cat Cougar 550. I'm guessing either one could be had for $1200 or less.

I take it that EFI eliminates the power valve issue?

No the EFI does not eliminate the power valves issue, its not an issue realy. The powervalves give you better low end torque and better fuel economy by restricting the exaust at sertain points. Some people don't like them cause you have to run higher end oil along with cleaning and adjusting the valves.

Thanks, that's a good lead. My time window of travel (to pick one up) has just about expired for a few months. It's back to work next week and then to Africa for a few weeks. Looks like this will be a next year project. Your posts have been so helpful, thank you all!
