The secret is prevent the rust before it happens. I have an 95 Arctic Cat and the pipe still looks like new. Every year, before I put my sleds away, I spray wd40 all over everything under the hood including the pipe. Still looks like new.

hi heat paint

I just knocked off the loose stuff and sprayed it with cooking spray let it soak in and run it. it will smoke +smell a little, then slowly bake to a nice black that stayes shiney like a cast iron skillet cost 1.65 a can, recoat any time. Ihave done this to my wood stoves for years in the off season. my pipe was rusted bad when bought last year ,after 500 miles and sitting all 3 seasons it is shiney black. another light coat and smell the popcorn,

Petroleum based oil won't work because it is formulated not to break down with heat. Cooking oil "burns" when it gets too hot- and turns black and forms what is essentially organic teflon, the stuff that coats cast iron skillets, stoves, etc, and protects from rust. I just wish I thought of that years ago. I have spent hours each fall wire brushing and stove painting my pipes on 3 or 4 sleds- time I could have spent on more important preparations/repairs/upgrades. I'm definitely going to try the cooking oil trick this year!

ac

if you put it on to heavy, it will take longer to season and stay a little tacky to the touch, but if you ride alot of miles this should not be a problem.

YES JUST LIKE PAM ,I use the cheap stuff from the dollar store but one can will last forever, so you could spring for the best and spend 4.00 vs 1.65 this time I think mine has olive oil in it so I guess my sleds are blessed. THEY MIGHT NEED IT
