Got some more powder to ride on today :) ... sled broke again

We got a LOT of snow today . (And got a fair share last week)

Was just about up to my knee in some spots on the lake. Was a lot of fun after having to wait all year for because the sled was in the shop with all sorts of problems. Took the day off and went out...

Unfortunately my sled broke down in the middle of the lake, YET AGAIN!
Fouled a plug immediately after driving it off the trailer. Changed the plug and it was running like a raped snake at ~7900 rpm at full throttle for awhile, slowed down to make a turn, and it popped a little through the exhaust (figured after running at higher rpms was just the hot exhaust)... went to give it gas and it was surging at 6000rpm... Headed back towards the trailer immediately because I knew what was coming... Slowed down for another curve and this time the rpm's decided to drop off significantly as soon as I touched the throttle. RPM's dropped down to 500 and was on the verge of dieing and I played with the throttle until I got it to surge back up to 4000. Decided I wasn't going to goof around and take the corners safely and I tried to not slow down as much for the next turn, sled slid out on some ice and then caught some snow and I took the leap of faith but landed on my feet luckily. Sled ended up dieing out in the middle of the lake about 2km away from my truck in upper-shin deep snow.
To make matters worst it was one of those white-out days and it was starting to blizzard a little, decided I was going to ride the sled back or leave it there.
Primed it up and pulled it over while holding the throttle, it would start but kept dieing... I realized it would only remain running if I kept priming it.

Drove back with my right hand working the primer and my left hand working the throttle (figure that one out!)...
Good running plug was dark cardboard brown with 1 lighter brown spot. Other plug was black (leads me to believe it's oil).

Anyways, thats my story for todays riding experience!
I'm thinking it's the oil settings on that cylinder since it fouled two plugs in ~60 minutes and I don't think it's leaning out. I'm guessing the added gas while priming was what kept the oil-gas mixture acceptable.

It worked amazingly well the day I picked it up, since then all that's happened is a little drop from driving it off the trailer, filling the gas up from 1/4 to full and slightly colder conditions and the engine bay got filled up with snow while riding... Oh and I started it, maybe I'm fouling them up as soon as I start it?
Unless the main jet got blocked and it was leaning out? Air filter wasn't blocked...

I don't know, I'm beyond frustration now. It CAN'T be an ignition problem. New Caps, Wires, Coil, Plugs, CDI and the Stator has been re-timed. Shouldn't be gas it's a fresh tank and the Carbs were just redone and rejetted. Using synthetic oil. Rotary valve timing was redone. Clutches are clean and seem to be functioning fine. Chain tension reset and fresh oil. Track tension was reset. The top end was taken off and both pistons looked good, one was a little scoured but not enough for concern... Compression was over 130 on both sides and within 10 of eachother.
The carbs were jetted a little leaner when I got it tuned-up so I imagine the guy would have set the oil injection to match, but I'm definitely leaning towards an over-oiling problem.

I dunno, I give up on this snowmobiling thing ... Just kidding I'll be back out as soon as possible...

I would pull the carbs and soak them over night then spray them down over and blow them out. Also do all the jets as well! The oil pump works for both cyl! You likly had a stuck float on the one side! Was it in the trailer with the gas off? You turned it on started right up then fouled?

It is definitely not an oiling problem.
Have you checked for intermittent spark yet?

I think it's either a stuck float or your fuel pump is going bad.

After I posted I gave it some thought and immediately realised I forgot to turn the fuel line off while trailering it. *slapshead*
The ramp kicked out while I was loading it (the strap that holds it in place wiggled itself free) so I quickly ran around back and lifted up the back end and pushed it the rest of the way on... Then I went and cleaned up the broken glass (ramp kicked out and hit my cardboard box of glass recycling)... was in a hurry to get out after wasting so much time cleaning up glass and quickly strapped it in and headed out. Completely forgot to turn off the fuel line. I just assumed it was another sled problem, it has been the last 2 seasons.

Cleaned it out and put new plugs in it and it's running great again.

Go ahead and make fun of me, you are given permission.

Why do you need to turn off the fuel line while trailering it?

What did you clean out?

See I just proved your not an id10t. I am for not knowing why this is such a big deal. I have never turned off my fuel line before trailering any of my snowmobiles.

Keeps fuel from flowing into the cylinders.
People say to also turn the gas off if you store the back of the sled up for a period of time.

I guess I have just been lucky then. The only time I turn my fuel line off is when I am going to store it for the summer, and I run the carbs dry.

Check your owners manuals and even of the sled itself, recommended that you turn off the fuel valve when trailering.

Yeah all the shaking and what not essentially just fills the cylinders/crankcase with gas.
ROTAX engines are especially bad for it for whatever reason... something to do with the rotary intake valve I'm guessing.

Yeah I don't feel THAT dumb for forgetting to turn it off, just dumb for ranting about it and blaming the sled!
I'll get you good eventually Chris

Figured out why its never caused me a problem, its because I have never owned a ski-doo so I guess I will never have to worry about this then.

j/k thanks for the info guys, I will take that into consideration next time I trailer my sled.

I spose I might do that. Been trailering for 18 years now and never turned the fuel off once on any sled. Then again, maybe I'm just lucky? Hell, for all I know, none of my fuel valves work! Well, acutally, I did have to use them on a couple sled when doing some work to them...
