running my sled below zero

its below 0 here in minnesota today. i was riding out on the lake and i thought i could hear some missfiring or a slight pop as i was riding 1/4 throttle slowing down. maybe i only herd it because i was paranoid and knew that the cold temps would make it run leaner. im pretty sure that it has its stock jets in it. the plugs where jsut slightly lighter than color of cardboard. usually they are cholotale brown with tan tips at the very end. should i wait till it warms up or can i ride it without worrying?

Lean means too much air for the amount of fuel. You can burn an engine down at 20:1 . If you have enough air to ignite 100% of the fuel in engine, then engine has no oil left to lubricate and....BOOM! More oil will maybe help for a minute, not in the long run. That is why temperature plays a facture in burning down an engine. Cold air is more dense and thus has more oxygen, more oxygen burns more fuel. Stock jets should be good to 25 below without a problem, but with downsized it become more risky.

You need to know what jets you have in your carbs. Cats have a jetting chart on them that shows what jets to run at what temp and altitude. That chart is a good guideline, but reading your plugs gives you a more accurate picture of what jets you should be running. I've run my ZR down to -20 no problem using the jets on the chart. I run my EXT at 2 sizes lower than the chart, and it's been fine for over 4,000miles. I keep a logbook showing what jets work best at different temps and altitudes as well as clutch weight sizes, clutch spring colors, etc.

2 Things to do, increase the main jet one size and raise the needle(lower E clip)!
They do make a controller that you can adjust the flow rate! Holtz makes the veri flow!

I run my sleds at -30C witch is around -20F to -25F. Anything colder than that and its just miserable to ride anyway. Rejet if you need to and youll be fine.

Find a temperature / altitude / jet chart for your sleds engine. From -30 to 0 mine takes a .280
