paragliding

so a couple weekends ago, my friend brought his new "wing" over (a paraglider - think hang glider without any metal frame) and the whole setup, with the hope of towing it behind my sled and thus flying up in the air. Well, suffice to say it worked. Two of us who had never done it before got up and flew around a bit, and the guy with the wing went up about 400 feet on 560 feet of line and pulled the release to come gently floating down to earth over about 2 min. I posted a couple videos on youtube, check them out - Just search "cottoncove" that's my account. In one of the pictures below where the "pilot" isn't facing the camera, you can see my snowmobile on the ground near one of the big black straps toward the upper right of the picture...

How did you get enough traction with the rear of the sled while the glider was goin up in the air??

it's actually not that much up-pull - the line can't (read: shouldn't) go past 45 degrees... we did have some major slipping, especially pulling into a light breeze (very light) but just keeping tension was good enough to gain height... we would maintain about 25, and ideally there's not all that much pulling going on with slow constant flight, unlike what you see in the youtube videos. It's actually better that it slips a little because something that could really give a hard sudden tug could be bad for the pilot...

hahaha I don't know what's worse, if my gf was big enough to help the weight of the sled or the fact that we had 2 dudes on the sled (of course, one was facing backwards, but anyway)

Cool
Same premise as para-sailing behind a boat but the landing is a bit harder!
