Need desperate help for a friend 2003 Yamaha Viper Problem

I am posting this for a friend trying to see if this is a trait or not.

2003 Viper 700 carb triple was a bear to start with numerous problems since new. It has been back to the shop 5 times for no start issues and hard start and idling problems.

We met up and rode about 2 weeks ago and the sle died 20 miles from the truck. We dragged it back hit it with some starting fluid as it wouldnt start at all and it limped into the trailer.

He takes the sled in and to his surprise one cylinder 0 compression 1 at 40% and one normal. They also tell him the crank bearrings are shot(?)

Sled pulls over and will run just sounds terrible and really runs lousy.

He has an extensive paper trail from taking it to the dealer. Is there any recourse at this point since this sled has been a problem since new? It has 4XX miles yes hundred not thousand on it. He used it for his kids this is not an abused sled at all (kids are 10 and 8). Sled was fine before this last ride....Is it possible to suck enough powder through the hood into that horizonatal foam intake to kill it? Is this possibly just a lemon and is he SOL?

He is being told 4500 for repairs...He says he will scrap it (I will take it apart and sell it for him or put in an ebay motor if need be. Will any other motors fit?)

Where should we start with getting this situation rectified?

I would like to add that my friend is mechanically illiterate. They charged him 100 for a compression test and 250 to tear the sled motor down to "find out why it has no compression".

It was my mistake im trying to get out of working on them and my friend respected that and got hosed. But with those prices and the lets see why its got no compression makes me think that they are hosing him.

If it has a paper trail, call the Better Business Bureau. Maybe they can do something. It's dealers like that that give others a bad name.

That is what I told him to start with. The dealer told him to call Yamaha to see what they would do. They do have a paper trail.

I would help him but I am at the end of my "off season" to do work outside my full time job and 2 businesses so I really dont have fair time to devote to getting this prject done. I am a tournament bass fisherman and that starts again at the end of Feb so now is research time for the first ones tournaments of the year.

We did find a short block but I have never torn in to a hammer so I dont know whats involved in motor removal and electronics on these. We will see...

Low milage or not,if the sled wasn't stored properly since new or winterized properly before riding I would say he is on his own.You only need to skip either one of these once and that motor could be toast,no matter how well it is built.Even if it had been done you would need documentation to prove it before any manufacturer is going to do anything for you.I know that wasn't what you wanted to hear, but that's the way I see it.

All bought and paid for seasonally with scheduled maintainance through the original dealership. Papers to back it all...I perasonally think he has a case. All scheduled maintainance is done on time and papertrailed also.

He has a 4 strok Apex from them also so both go in yearly he pays for all his work as he has no idea how to do it on his own.
