Be Careful...
Kristin, my Brother, and I almost got taken out by a truck this weekend snowmobiling. The light turned red for him and about 5 seconds later he went through it. Luckily, I had seen it and held everyone back because he looked like he was traveling too fast. He slid through the intersection sideways and his headlights were facing us. If we would have gone, he would have hit us!
Watch the traffic and be safe! Jake

Glad you made it. It's like motorcycles, drivers need to get "used" to them being around.

I hear ya. A few years back a family friend and his wife riding 2-up and got t-boned by a guy in a pickup truck. The had just enough time to bail off the sled, but they still got some pretty serious injuries (he hurt his knee and she got a broken collarbone) but the sled was totalled. I think about the only thing on the sled that was salvagable was the engine, the rest of the sled was pretty much junk.
The guy in the truck was drunk, so he lost his driving licence, got a pretty hefty ticket and sat in jail for 6 months.
Road crossings can be very dangerous, especially if they cross in the turn where you cant see if traffic is coming. A lot of the times, we will have the lead person in our group cross and then wave the other sleds across when the traffic is clear. That makes it safer for the others, but its still a "give 'er and hope for the best" kind of proposition for whoever is in the lead.

I stay as far away as possible from any traffic as I can. Seems a lot of deaths happen around cars.

The ride was great... Kristin was a little upset because it was her first weekend and I advised her to watch out for things and she doesn't like to be put in a dangerous position... I have no idea how she survives with the job I do.

Thank God the little girl was OK. That could have easily ended up tragic and it just goes to show you how fragile and fleeting life can be.

Glad to hear it was only a near miss!
Sledding where there are traffic lights???? Is riding on the public roads a regular practice in rural areas of the US?

Haha, it was in Medina, by the Ballroom. I was crossing the highway to get to the trail on the other side. Everyone crosses at that point and it is marked. I sled in the Cities because that is where the garage, truck, and trailer are at. I work South of the Cities.

Around here there are a few places where the trails cross main highways at traffic light intersections. It's better than having the trail cross a 4 lane highway where there isn't any lights.

Interesting. Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you're not careful!

This sounds Familiar. On our first ride of this year my wife was crossing 101 at an intersection in Maple Grove, Mn right behind me and a little blue Dodge Neon went right through the red light as my wife was crossing with her 2-up and our son on the back. It was as close a call as you can get as the young girl in the Neon managed to swerve to avoid hitting them. Man that made me mad....all I could think as I looked back to see the near miss was why the heck did I buy these sleds.

I remember my first season of sledding - I didn't really get any warnings about road crossings and whatnot, just the very basics. We had a number of road crossings this weekend, and they still make me nervous!!
Other than the scare, I hope Kristin is enjoying sledding!

It actually is quite common. Where I normally ride in NE Wisconsin, quite a few of the snowmobile trails have sections that are on public roads.
At one of the road crossings in Eagle River you actually have to wait at a stoplight before you can cross the road.

A sled is like a motorcycle. Those who dont ride, tend to be ignorant to that little headlight coming at them. I hate people sometimes.
