So last spring i was really bored after school one day. I had this 87 exciter that was sitting in my shed that had never ran right. sometimes it would seem to be running great in the winter, so i would take it out for a ride and just when i would get to the middle of the lake it would bog and run on one cylinder.

then i would have to rev it until it would engauge so it would travel ten feet at a time the 1/4 mile that i had to go to get home.

... not fun. anyway on this day i felt like i could fix anything. I went out and looked for what could be wrong. i had cleaned the carbs before this. i noticed that the plugs were soaked in black oil. (and the machine went through oil very fast) then i was going to adjust the oil intake. I adjusted the nut a few turn and was going to test how it was running. the sled started very easy but just had no power. because it was spring there was very little snow on the ground. then i had the bright idea that i would hold the back of the snowmobile off the ground with my left hand and hold the gas with my right hand. ( I didnt have a stand to hold the sled up.... bad idea) off of the ground it seemed to be running great throught the whole power band. i started off with little spurts of the throttle but then became more adventurous grabbing the throttle watching the speed climb to 100 or so. then i did it one more time. i was watching it climb, climb, climb to 100... and then like a the track broke like the sound of a gun shot!

the side of the track had ripped at the cleats on the right. the long chunk of track had swung around, smashed the taillight, and smacked the rear bar... with my hand holding it. i herd the sound and saw the bits of plastic from the light fly in slow moition. i dropped the sled (the track had bound up so it didnt fly off into the shed wall, thankfully) hopped away and then looked at my hand. my left index finger was almost at 90˚

. while walking back to the house i noticed that the metal cleates were on the ground over 100 ft from the shed! long story short after 3 months, a surgery with a plate and 8 screws my finger is now fine. i sold the yamaha and now just have my EXT. any time i now see someone with there snowmobile on a stand reving the motor i run for cover. im terifed of it.

oh well so just dont rev your sled high on a stand or you may break the track... lessons hard learned. i have a pic of the x ray.
