Fog and Ice Prevention - Pro Tips?

Hey There,

New to the forum, and relatively new to riding sleds. I need some advice from you pro's..

Me and buddy decided to dedicate ourselves a little more this year to snowmobiling beyond the usual 3-4 trips we've been doing for the past 5 (hell, we live in Bend,Oregon - kind of a shame if we didn't). I'm looking for the very best solutions on keeping our goggles fog-free on the inside, and eliminating the build-up of ice and snow on the outside.

I've read about many anti-fog solutions on the home-brew front like potato's, apples, liquid soap, bar soap, etc. As well as anti-fog cloths and products. But what really works? What is going to last for more then 5 minutes?

Same with keeping the snow and ice off of the outside of the goggles -- Will something as simple as Rain-X work ok?

I really appreciate your help on this...

Thank you in advance.

Smith's anti-fog cloth works for me... just have to wipe before you go out.
The squeegee gloves work to get the snow off. thats about all you can do.
If you don't have the breathboxes for you're helmet, make sure you buy those.

You're best bet is a snowmobile helmet with power.

Thanks. That helps.

Now to show my total noob-ness; What is a breathbox and where can I find one?

This is what an HJC breathbox looks like:

And this is it inside the HJC helmet:

Mine came with, g/f had to buy it separate and I think it was $15???

They make them for all styles of helmet and for all the major brands (they actually have exhaust ports that will go into your helmets exhaust ports)

If not, they make balaclava's and face masks that have built in breathboxes that fit underneath your helmet.
Royal Distributing - Snowmobile Parts and Accessories. ATV, Motorcycle Parts and Accessories. Just use their search tool. The helmets are from page 46-69 or something liek that. I dont have my catalogue on me but I think the helmet accessories are on page 72 or something?

Again if you're having fogging problems and you ARE buying a new helmet, get one with the heated visor. You'll never have a fogging problem again. (Typically another 60 dollars if you buy it with the helmet, 120 if you buy it separate. I believe

Good question! I've been wondering the same thing. Last year when I got into it I bought a CKX helmet at the dealer for 110 on sale. It was not heated, I didint even know they existed. This was a big mistake in my opinion since I didint get one that fit perfectly and was not heated. Now I'm stuck with a helmet that I dont mind but still fogs if you're not going fast I find. It has the dual lens but it doesnt help that mutch. For like 50$ I could of gotten a heated one that was corect. Moral of story get the right one the first time, heated.

A while back, Locky performed a not-so scientific experiment to measure the effectiveness of liquid soap & it's ability to prevent fogging on the mirror in his bathroom. The results were astounding!! Maybe some one can dig up that thread??

I tried the same thing with shaving cream, since i heard that worked too...yes it did prevent fog/steam up's after long hot showers, that i was impressed by-honestly, but it did puddle the water up on the mirros into droplets that sloowly slid down the mirror...so i can imagine with the humidty slipping from your helmet to even cause fogging, now turning into ice droplets with the cold air seeping into the helmet, so now you have ice-inside and out...but i've never personally tried it and am looking at Scorpions modular heated visor helmet..looks just like the bad azzed bombadier modulars, but for $100-200/less. heated visor and all
