mixture question
i have several old machines and they all say to mix 20:1 with 30w oil. i have been mixing at that ratio with a good 2-stroke oil and i was wondering if i could go leaner on oil considering the advances in oil in the last 35 years and if so what mixture? will it cause harm or just keep doing what i've been doing

If you are using a synthetic oil, you can mix safely at 40:1.

well i'm not using a synthetic because pre-mixing with a syn would get expensive, i mean each 6 gal i use would be 20 ounces of oil to mix 40:1, thats over 1/2 qt. every fill up, at 10$a qt. that would get expensive right now my mixings easy, i pay 13 for a gal and put 1 qt. in 5 gal. even in my indy which is injected i dont use syn cuz of the cost and i use an average of 1 1/2 gal. per season in the inj. tank

Dude, find a dealer of AMSOIL. You can buy it fairly cheap, and you will be running a much higher quailty oil.

There is one only a mile from me, I'm still too cheap to spend the difference when I can use that money for gas.

basically all i wanted to know is if i could go leaner on oil using a 'regular' 2-stroke oil or to keep mixing 20:1 like i have been doing considering the original pre-mix oil that was recommended was a 30 weight oil.

The synthetics and blended oils are better protection and run cleaner than the straight 30W. And since you can mix it leaner, you will spend less in the long run.
