4000 Miles too many for a used sled?

Looking at a '99 RMK 700 with 4000 miles. Needs trailing arm and shock due to rock attack, but other than that, apparrently all is well. Stock except for: tunnel extended to accomodate track extension to 152", pipe, can. Rode in mountains, and I'll be doing the same.
My question is really a bit more general.....how many miles on a mountain sled is too many? One buddy says 2500 miles max or pass on it, and the other buddy says no limit, it's all about the maintenance. What do the experts here say?
appreciate any help.

I bought a used,in mint condition,2005 F7 firecat last year with 4600 miles on it.It was a good deal for me. Track already picked, reverse,Black magic can.Thats $1000+ worth of accessories right there.$3500 is what I paid for it.
Check the KBB price of it too.You don't want to pay more than that.

Never sold a sled with less than 6000 miles on it (except the Indy Lite). 4,000 miles isn't that much, depending on maintenance. Should go another 4,000 no problem (assuming good maintenance and taking care of your equipment).

I wouldn't shy away.

A sled with lots of miles and good maintenance may indeed be a better deal than a sled with no maintenance and low miles. Check condition of the sled, get it up on it's side, look at the skis, look at the belly pan, the track, and everything else. You can get a feel by looking what kind of care it had. 700 engines are pretty durable, I wouldn't be too afraid of 4000 miles on one. If it was an 800, I would be more concerned.

Even with good maintenance, make sure you take a good look at the driveline PTO side bearing, it is a weak point on Polaris and AC sleds. IT's all about price, figure in the repair costs, and look for things that may be costly; how's the track? When were the clutches serviced/rebuilt? How about the shocks? Are they the cheaper non-rebuildable ones, or are they rebuildable? If rebuildable, (that's a plus) when was the last time they were serviced? Kelley Blue Book and the NADA guide are a guess at best for the worth of a sled. If sleds are really selling, you can get more than KBB, if it hasn't snowed for a while or had lousy snow (like a lot of places) sleds are cheap. One buddy just bought a 2002 RMK 800 for 3000 bucks, another bought a 2005 RMK 800 for 4200. Deals are out there, just have to have your eye out!

asking price is $1500, which has my mouth watering.......I'm looking into price of replacement front shocks now (know a good place to look?). At that price, I'm thinking it's too good to be true, but I at least feel a bit better about the mileage now. It's just pretty rare in these parts to find a sled still in one piece with that many miles. Mountain miles = hard miles I would think.
