Question carb help

i have a 2001 polaris 600 classic with stock 490 main jets, it runs okay but the plugs are black. the wormer it gets the worst it gets. i don't ride when its below -0. and i don't ride wide open. i'am wondering what size jets i can safely go down to. id like to lean it out, but don't want to burn it up. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

Start by moving the e-clip on the slide needle all the way to the top, that'll lean it out a little.

jets are cheap, get a couple sizes smaller and do plug checks after you install them.

i moved the needles to the leanest setting last winter, and it did not help very much.i don't have a garage so i was hoping to rejet it safely, before it got to cold outside. its not very fun rejeting outside in the snowbank.

Factory jetting is always on the rich side. They don't want to pay for burndowns under warranty. Get some 480's, try 'em, then 470's if the 480's are still too rich. Like Upersleder said, jets are cheap. If you change the mains, put the e-clip back in the middle so you dont burn down in the midrange...
