Anybody haul their sleds in a 4 place enclosed trailer?
If so, how do you tie them down. My dad was told from a friend that they never tie there sleds down, just set the parking brake and go. Seems like they could move it you hit the brakes to hard. Just curious...

It all depends on how far you are going. I don't bother tying down my sleds if I am only going 20 miles to go ice fishing, but I do on the way to the UP (5-6 hour drive). I use the stock trailer bars through the floor but I have really been looking at the quick clamps that they have in the high performance engineering books.

My 4-place trailer has rings at the back of the sleds, in the middle and on both sides. I slip a tie-down strap through the rings and through the back bumpers to keep them from going forward if you have to stop quickly. My old trailer, I installed ski clamp brackets and clamped 'em. Setting the brake will keep 'em from moving a little, but if you really stop fast, everything ends up in the front of the trailer

Its not good to keep the hydraulic brakes on all the time. They are not made for that kind of strain.
I agree with the guys about the tie downs.

i heard that it's bad to tie down the back off a sled because it's bad to have the shocks compressed for long period's of time don't know if this is true just what i heard from my dads buddy!

At the very least, use the "t-bar" type and a short strap on the rear of the sled to keep it in place. If they are not anchored, any sudden stop can have them going right through the front of the trailer. Remember, 4 sleds at an average of 600# each plus any snow and other gear is a lot of weight to not have secured properly.

Another thing to consider is what is legal in your state. I believe in Michigan you have to have both the front and rear of a snowmobile, atv, etc. tied down. I don't know how strictly they are going to enforce this, but I have known people who have gotten in trouble for not secure loads before.

Don't secure it to the bumpers, the shocks prevent them from staying tight. Go through the rear suspension and fasten it to the rear rings. I also fasten the front by going under the trailing arm right before the ski, so the shocks don't dampen when I tighten also, but thats an open trailer. With the brakes on the sleds shouldn't move around. If your on a bumpy road I'd fasten it because then can jump easily.

I have hauled mine since 99 in my trailer with no tie downs. they fit tight ski to ski and dont move. I even put the whole outfit in the ditch sideways last spring and the sleds never moved.

i put a steel rod over the ski's that goes through holes dilled in the side of trailer and a pin at one side to keep it in (slides in through side of trailer) and strap down the back but not too tightly so their isn't any damage to shocks. hope you get the idea, i'm probably a little con fusing but...

I've got a big enclosed with cabinets and work benches, I can get 5 sleds in and have never tied them down and I got 10-12 hour trips. But then I don't go off roading with them either! I guess if I only had 1 or 2 I might use the rings in the floor? But then if I only have 1 or 2 then I would just take the truck!
Once you have experianced an enclosed trailer you'll wonder how you ever survived!

I found the way the trailer keeps the sleds all shiny and new looking was worth the price of admission no doubt

It is against the law to haul any loose cargo over 25 lbs on, or in a truck bed or trailer. All of those who say they never tie them down are just gambling. One hard stop like an accident and you got 4 600 lb projectiles that will rip through any enclosed trailer like a bullet and rip right through your tow vehicle and take you or other motorists out.
Also, if the worst did happen, your liabilty insurance would be voided due to negligence, just read the fine print on your insurance policiy concerning negligence. You would then be liabile for all injuries and property damage. And if some one was fataly injured, you would loose everything.
Just Don't do it.

The law states that the cargo must be "properly" tied down. A shoe lace from the tie down ring to the sled would not be proper, so you should get the a strap that is rated to hold the load. There are some really nice quick tie down bars that are on the market that will securly hold the sleds and are easy to use. So the answere is Yes if it's properly tied down.
Take a look at a semi with a flat bed and look how much over kill they have holding their cargo. They don't do it that way for looks.

I use a 2" wide ratcheting strap that goes through under the tunel and cinches down on the track instead of compressing the suspension.. The strap is 20' long and goes all the way around the trailer. Much more secure than trying to tie off to the grab rail in the back IMHO

Not worried about the strap I mean the plywood? the rings in my floor are just screwed to the 5/8 plywood with 4 drywall type screws! If I hit something I'll be lucky to survive!
