Ideas on overheating sled? v-max

92 v-max 4....If I ride for 20 min, then shut the sled off and leave sit for a half hour, then go ride again, after the engine gets warmed up the second time, my coolant light starts to flicker on and off. Stays on if I leave the sled sit and idle, but still flickers when driving it.

I replaced the thermostat and radiator cap. I removed the thermostat the other day when it happened and it was wide open, and slowly went back closed when it cooled off in my hand. So it is definetly getting hot in there.

I purged the air out of the back heat exchanges under the seat. I could hear air escape when I cracked them open.

What should I try next?

Thanks

Are the exchangers getting warm? There still might be air in them. Make sure they are heating up. If they are not, they still need to be bled.

There are so many other variables which could/would affect the over heating. Are you losing any water? have you had any of the motor apart?

What type of conditions are you riding in? If it is hard pack, or ice, or if you are driving slowly all the time, that can also cause a sled to overheat. Just a thought.

Wasn't sure if I could do it that way?

Sounds like you have an air-lock. Did you elevate the front of your sled while you bled the air out? Just a thought.

I noticed the tubes under my seat and the fins by the track are getting warm, not hot, but warm to the touch.

I also noticed my resivor tank is overflowing

My radiator is warm also, but not hot on the outside when I touch it with my bear hands.

Does this tell me anything?

Also....where can I find a temp gauge at...and where does the probe mount?

Thanks guys.

I still havent tried the head gaskets yet.....that looks kinda tricky. If I wanted to test head gaskets, do I just run the engine with the rad cap off and look for bubbles?

Also, I picked a jug of "stop leak" up today at farm and fleet....would it hurt to pour that in?

It sounds either like air or possibly the coolant system is pressurising, possible head gasket leak?

Don't use the stop leak. Let's fix it the right way.

If the head gasket is leaking you may not smell that sweet anti freeze smell, but with the engine warm and cap off and the front end up you could see air bubles continue to come up preety steady for as long as it is running and even for a few seconds after its off!
Replacing the head gaskets (orings) isn't hard, just drain the system as much as you can and remove the bolts in a criss cross patern and take it off. You'll need to remove the water passage too.
