Is this accurate, or shady?

As some you know, I just got a new sled. And I don't really know much about engine maintinence and such. Well since I got a sled, one of my buddies is looking, and he came across this post on our MTU forum:
"Snowmobile, 1998 MXZ 500 (bored over) Skidoo. Engine needs work. Cyliners need either replacement or to be re-bored. New pistons and other parts available. Cheap fix, and easy weekend project. Chassy in great shape. Asking $700, needs to sell will negotiate pricing. Call for more details."
Does this seem accurate to you guys? Is it really a "weekend project?" I mean with a service manual and a couple of engineers, could we get this done, without too much expirience?

And if anyone has any ballpark pricing on re-boring, and parts that would help too. Prolly going to be taking a look this weekend with him, so we will see...

pretty much, if you have the right stuff, once you have what you need and the proper cylinders it should be a two hour job to get it together. if you dont like it let me know, i may be interested in it.

There is another problem along with then engine rebuild. Obviously it failed once for some reason and then was rebuilt.

Then it failed again so they never fixed the problem that caused the 1st failure or it's a new problem.

Sounds like you are buying someone else's headache. DOn't be tempted by the price unless you are prepared to dump more money into it.

Well I think the story goes so far, that the re-bore was effed up, and the holes are oblong now. So he's got new parts waiting to go in, but it just needs to be re-bored...

So my buddy says, who talked to the seller on the phone.

If it just needs the 2 cylinders (probably $100 apiece used) it's worth that price.

US Crome can replate them (if they had plating before?) If all else is OK then the only other thing you might want to do is replace the seals! That could be why it went down to begin with? How many miles? About 5k and I would replace em

Well, it sounds like this may actually be a deal. Not even to mention the fact that the guy, said that the price is "negotiable" and that it "needs to sell." If you are going to write that... you might as well expect to get low-balled.

Thanks for the Input!

I really hope that he buys it, so I can get my hands dirty and learn about a sled, while mine is still running

Heh, I'm not really sure you'd want to do that, I'm sure it's going to be a trial by fire.

Looked into the parts, looks like if he wanted to replace the cylinders then he would of course have to buy the stock sized piston kit... So prolly like 300 bones, on ebay.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures when we go to take a look. Assuming the guy lets me, not sure why he wouldn't

Couple of these would do the trick? Plus new rings, stock pistons... such and such.

Here is the whole listing... but its for a 1998 MXZ 500.

Would the cylinder head also have to be replaced, or will it still work with the stock size?
