from UP to Canada
Just a quick silly question.. I want to go on a long snowmobile trip this year, and was wondering if it was possible to ride from the lower UP all the way into Canada? If it is, what would I need to get into Canada as I don't get out much. Also, I would prefer not to skip across Lake Superior....

As far as I know you can't drive sleds accross the actual border itself as it is a bridge and they won't let bicycles let alone sleds drive accross. I'm sure somewhere you can find a patch of ice or maybe a border other than the Sault Ste Marie one that will be able to let a sled accross. As for crossing the border itself all you'll need is ID and the permits for your sled (registration and insurance). Maybe someone else can chime in if there's an actual trail that can be driven accross.

I've never seen or heard of one. I haven't known of anyone to do it on a sled in the 4 years I went to school there. I know its a popular motorcycle drive, going from Marquette, all the way around the coast into Wisconsin, then up into Canada, and all the way to the Soo, but then they cross the bridge, so I don't think a sled can cross there. If I recall my facts correctly, the last time Superior froze over all the way across was the late 1890's (I dated a girl who worked at the local news station up there, they have a weather guy who's chuck full of pointless weather facts.) Anyways, I have thought about this before too, but, just go from somewhere like St. Ignace and do the whole trails up through Munising and all the way to the Keewanaw. I will be doing a few runs up there myself this year.

I know there are organized runs around this part of the world (between Manitoba and Minnesota), so it has been done. I imagine you just need to make arrangements with the office at the border crossing in advance.
Also, don't forget you will need a passport to get back into the U.S. after January 8, 2007.

I believe the passport is only required if your flying into the US.
You have until 2009 to enter the US with photo ID by land.

Passport will be required for any entry back into US at any border crossing that has Customs inspection.....drive, fly or walk!

you can ride along trail 8 from the western part of the UP (ironwood) all the way to the eastern part (the soo). as far as riding from the lower UP, any trail will lead you to trail 8.
when you get to the soo, you can then ride along lake superior to wawa. id suggest taking the snow train. Agawa Canyon Snow Train
here's a map of wawa:

i cant remember how you get from the UP to CAN, either by having the sleds trailered or if they will let you drive across. that's the only thing i cant remember right now.

I don't know?
Still believe As of Jan 8/2007 Passports are required by air and land is later.
Check this.

there is an ice bridge that goes from Drummond Island to Canada, but I don't know how you check in once you're there or any other information. Never made the ride across myself.

wow, thank you all so much for the info. I just thought it would be fun. It seems it can be done through MN, just no the UP. Maybe I can at least ride somewhere and see Canada in the distance.
Thanks again for all the help.

My bad!
I forgot that they deferred the land crossing passport rules by a year. 2008 it is.
