reverse problems on 95 polaris xlt 600

I have a 1995 Polaris XLT 600 Special with reverse, I need to know how to adjust reverse from putting case cover on to adjusting chain and reverse tension.

Chain tension

I have a 96 600 XLT Touring (w/Reverse) The first season I smoked the chain and gears by over tensioning. It got so hot the gear oil dip stick melted. Duh! I replaced everything in the grear case and my buddy adjusted the tensioner. In all fairness to Buddy. Plus the fact he works for Ontario Hydro where they use nothing but big tools and pipes on johnston bars. I would like to know the proper Polaris recomended procedure for tightening/adjusting the drive chain...PLEASE?

Don't have a Pol manual, but AC recommends finger tighten the adjustment bolt & then tighten the jam nut. It's OK to have a little bit of slop in the chain, tho!

A buddy adjusted mine-he finger tightened and then backed off 1/4 turn, then tightened jam nut. So far so good...
