Sleds and Insurance in Ontario\Canada?
I'm not sure if I've read everything correctly but do I NEED insurance to be legal in Ontario with my sled? Even if I'm not even on a groomed trail? I've heard rumors that it's hard to even find insurance for anything over a 600. Does anyone know any details on this?
EDIT: One site says you NEED insurance, but it's the OFSC site which is groomed trails only. Another site says:
"In order to ride Ontario's trails, you must have insurance for your sled."
Sounds like you just need insurance to ride trails?

i know this doesnt pertain to ontario, but ive got insurance on my sled (in michigan)...to tell you the truth, w/ the way things are today, and how the "other" riders are, you can never be to careful.
plus when you bend a trailing arm, and mess up your whole right side front suspension <cough>like someone did on here <cough>..., ins. can pick it up

Insurance always makes sense...when it's affordable. We don't even have many insurance options around here, I was talking (last year) to a guy at work here who has an 800 and he couldn't find anyone to insure it with last year. I was just curious if it was NEEDED at all times or just on trails. I did some reading on the insurance offered by the OFSC and it sounds useless. It's insurance but from the sounds of it you're only covered when you are on OFSC trails. Quote:
" Sledder’s Choice, the new, leading edge group insurance program launching September 1, 2006. With Sledder’s Choice, many Ontario snowmobilers will be paying less for insurance when they ride trails operated by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) this winter, even on sleds with larger engines."
I'm just scared I have a nice new sled and I'll be paying a rediculous amount just to keep it legal.

Yes it is mandatory to have insurance in Ontario, and a real good idea.
I would call TD General insurance, they are the cheapest place around that I could find, I have a 900 RMK, and my insurance is about 300 for the year. With TD, all you have to do is call, dont have to meet with anyone.

In ontario/canada, to ride on OFSC trails, along with your permit, license and all that crap you must have liability insurance. The OFSC website will probably have more details. If you're riding on private property noone cares what you hit, it's not their problem. This is required incase you're an idiot and do something stupid like getting drunk and riding, and cripple someone.
I pay 800 a year for my two mxz's, 600cc and 670cc through allstate.

Good info guys, thanks. I called the place I'm insured with currently for my truck and they told me they won't insure anything over 600 which I think is total BS. Time to shop around I guess.

in ontario you hafta have atleast liability as soon as you leave your own property or you get a 5000 dollar fine. call premium insurance company... my buddy had 2 f7s insured with them last year, he told me they didnt really seem to care about the size of the sled... i got quoted 139 bucks for my 500. as apposed to 300 that i paid last year...

Hey everyone this is my first post so i hope this is done right
To ride any where other than your own land (private property) you do need
at least one million dollar liability coverage.
Depending on your driving record
Call Riders plus insurance in toronto
or Canada trust Insurance best rates on full coverage 440 bucks for my 07 gade. I hope tis helps

Well I did good. My own insurance company WON'T insure me so I shopped around. My bank is TD Canada Trust and I saw the commercial for their insurance so I called up the 800 number and sure enough they will insure me. For those who want to know what prices they gave me (if you are shopping around and want a rough idea) I got these quotes:
$392 yr FULL coverage 300$ deductible.
or
125$ yr liability.
They were the cheapest I could find, I'm unfortunately not 25 until march so these are the "young risky guy" rates they love to use. In the end if I move my truck over and insure my sled and truck with them it will be CHEAPER than the truck insurance I'm already paying alone! Go figure. Either way it worked out, thanks for the tips guys.

I was just wondering:
Can you transfer your insurance back and forth between you Sled and ATV? Or they going to make you pay for both by the year?
Thanks

Nice thought, I would love to that, but insurance companies want you to pay for both separately.
And if anyone knows different, I would love to know who their insurance company is so I could sign up.
