Loud Pipes

Here is an article that gives very good reasons against loud pipes and why they should not be allowed.

Starting Line Products - Technical Information

I agree this is probably just going to start a cat fight. Whether or not you like the sound (which I actually do). THEY ARE ILLEGAL ON TRAILS! Don't ride trails with them. It is against the LAW. ENOUGH SAID. If you're not riding trails than all the power to you. I want to shoot half the people I meet but I don't because it's ILLEGAL!!!! AGAINST THE LAW!!!!! If you can't understand that than you have bigger problems.

Can we just have a monthly scheduled pipe argument?? Lets remember that guns don't kill people...people kill people. And pipes don't ruin it for everyone, irresponsible A-holes ruin it for everyone.

Not sure how this phrase (originally coined by M/C'er's) made the walk to snowmobiles?? I can somewhat understand a motorcyclist in heavy traffic may want to be loud so the idiots on the road know he's around!! But, how does that apply to sleds, which don't run in heavy traffic??

I believe the theory is that people on the trail can hear it coming. I know around here that a lot of recreational walking trails are part of our snowmobile trail systems in the winter. May give them more time to get out of the way and possibly avoid being hit (Although the snowmobile rider should be under control and obeying the speed limit at all times and should be able to safely react to any obstruction on the trail ). As for other riders hearing them. With a helmet on and the noise of your own machine you're not going to hear squat!

Some like 'em loud. Have fun, but please don't ruin the sport for others. I know some places allow pipes, and others don't (NY for one). If you want it loud, make sure you're riding where it's okay to have it loud.

Personally, I think you'd do more towards saving lives by sticking a few hundred of those little deer whistles on your sled instead.

Besides; I still can't figure out why you'd want to give hikers or x-country skiers advanced warning. Aren't they worth a lot of points each time you hit one???

Good point IRS. M/C's aren't traveling on someone's private property on a trail system like sleds are.

personally, i like pipes. i like the sound.

i think that if this is becomming a big issue, they need to devise a way to satisfy both parties.

i think that pipe manuf. shoud make pipes for different applications, and give ratings on different sounds, however, still maintain the performance ppl are after. for example, flowmaster, borla, and mangnaflow all offer exhaust systems that deliver different end products to suit different needs. and in doing so provide mufflers that sound loud, medium, or "quiet".

right now you either drive a "quiet" sled, or you have one w/ pipes. there is no inbetween.

when it comes to hearing other sleds, pipes do give advanced warning. one example...i know for a fact that when another sledder wants to pass (who is behind you), all he does is burp the throttle and you hear the sled. then you say oh sh!t he wants to pass, and you move over.

Let's not forget to read the whole article and see that there is also personal hearing loss involved with loud noises of any kind.

Sure, but some don't read everything and some not at all, then just weigh in uninformed.

Remember that ringing in your ears is an early sign of hearing loss.

Huh? What? Just kidding, RJ!
Valid point.....I raced karts for nearly 16 years using un-muffled pipes that exit near your ears......not sure if I had had any damage/loss from that or if it was all the loud head-bangin' music??
