you aquire points by replying to posts, starting a thread, or viewing posts. you can also play the lottery and aquire points. or you can try stealing points from other members 
you can use your points to buy things, donate, thief, or improve your avitar, signature, ect.
check out the top of the page, click on the "store" button and have a look around.

Nothing, really. You can buy items for others, etc. But they're pretty much useless.
