Trailer

Have a little open tilt bed trailer pulled by a 3/4 ton K2500 4WD
Wife wants a Toy Hauler
I would like one but I live by the beach and drive to snow. Does anyone have experience pulling a loaded 6000 pound trailer in the mountains?

Just don't drive in overdrive. It'll burn your transmission faster than you can fry an egg

my dad pulled our old 25' travel trailer (5K-lbs-ish, i cant exactly remember)thru the rockys in montana w/ an older expedition (5.4L V8 '98-ish) and we never had a problem. the only thing that was different was that he used all avail. real estate to get a running start before going up steep grades. then on the way down utilized the trailer brakes to slow us down.

Like mouse said, pull the trans down out of OD. Also invest in the largest trans oil cooler you can fit behind your grill (in front of rad/condenser). Had a trans expert tell me that is the #1 improvement anyone can make to improve trans performance/durability!!

The hardest thing about a long heavy trailer, finding a place to turn around

Turning around can be a bear to handle. Yet to buy a trailer. Gonna go one of two routes. An 20' enclosed box trailer or a 22 to 26 feet toy hauler. Box trailer is 5 grand new anfd atoy hauler is 3 to 5 times more.

I don't think this applies unless lakes down there freeze deeper than I know of, but it's a good idea to take the loaded trailer onto a lake road or a large snow/ice covered parking lot and hit the brakes and get a feel for what the trailer and truck does in slippery situations.
And honing in the backing-up skills can be a huge deal when you need to turn around in tight spaces.

AMEN! Keep that tranny fluid cool and you'll be a happy camper. The hotter that fluid gets the thinner it gets! So take o/d off, you may burn some extra gas but your truck will thank you!

Do any of you use a TOY HAULER? DID any of ypou convert a BOX Trailer into a living Quaters? Any pointers to keeping things from freezing? Most trailers around my home are for non winter use. What do you do to winterize a trailer ... one with water, ghrwy tanks, shower etc?
