Help installing electric start on 73 Panther

(I posted this in the miscellaneous forum as well and wanted to post it here also. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by putting it in here!)

Hello Everyone,

I'm hoping that this will be my last stop in a long line of disappointments. I've tried talking to numerous people about installing electric start on this sled and no one seems to be able to help. I bought the starter and it is installed on the sled. My problem is that there was no wiring that came with the starter itself and I am completely clueless about how to go about wiring it up. Now, I feel that with some knowledgable instruction from one of you that I will be able to handle it. I beg for your assistance and look forward to having this project complete. The sled is my grandfather's and the reason I'm getting electric start put on it for him is so that he doesn't land himself in the hospital again after throwing his back out trying to start the sled out in the middle of nowhere. Thank you in advance and this board is very informative by the way.

Regards,

J

Shouldn't be too complicated to make a wiring schematic just for a start system.
You'll need a battery (obviously), starter solenoid (from a car), & a starter button or switch.
Mount battery in sled & connect 1 cable from Batt Neg (black) to eng ground.
Batt Pos (red) cable to 1 large post on solenoid.
Another red cable from other large post of solenoid to the starter.
Using about 12 ga wire (red), connect to Batt Pos to one side of a (momentary - normally open) starter button/switch. Other side of switch gets connected, using same type wire, to the small post on the solenoid. This circuit is used to energize the solenoid, which in turn will complete the circuit of the Pos cable from the battery to the starter.
A couple of qualifiers to this method:
1)The solenoid MUST be grounded to either the battery or the engine.
2)This method will not provide a charge to the battery, so it must be charged from other source (trickle charger) while not being used. To set it up to charge the battery from the engine, you will need a voltage rectifier/regulator and many other wiring mods.
3)You will still need to use the on/off key & any other safety tethers, just as if you were pull starting.

This is a very, very basic method to get the starter moving. I think there are others on this site who can/will add some details I may have left out.
Hope you get it to work!

Couldn't have said it any better, IRS.....On #1 above, though when he says ground the solenoid, ground it through one of the bolt holes when you mount it, not to one of the terminals!

Thank you both for the help, I appreciate it more than you know. I will go through the steps that IRS has given and also ground the solenoid through one of the bolt holes as smallengineguy advises. If anyone else has any advice, please feel free to post. I will keep you guys updated on my progress, which will hopefully be positive.

Suggestions on which solenoid to use

Here are a couple auctions on ebay for different solenoids, any advice on which to use would be greatly appreciated. The people here have been more than helpful so far, thank you again.

If none of these would be best please point me in the right direction on which one will be.

Thank you again,

The Prestolite is the best one. Just your 2 battery lines and one "trigger" wire.

You can get the solinoid at any auto store, Its the same on as you would use on a garden tractor or car.

I was in a NAPA store the other day & noticed a real compact solenoid they had.....I think it was for a lawn tractor. I'm sure it would work for you in your application.

It should, I have used the same type before, the output for a lawn tractor is the same as for a snowmobile engine.

Thanks again for the help, I am going to be hopefully starting on this project this upcoming weekend. I know it's early but I can't wait. If I hold off I will get extremely busy and won't find the time. I'll try to maybe post some pictures of the outcome if any of you are interested.
