Little taste of Arctic Man

Small suspension bridge over the creek.

Normal years, you don't see any of those bushes. Snow is typically about 4-5' deeper.

3rd shot is what the skiers look at on the drop off. This year the snow was fairly hard and crusty, which meant for a very fast drop. 1700' in less than 2 miles.

4th picture is actually from a previous year. This is where the snowmobiler drops off the skier (via tow-rope) for the final leg of the race). Generally the snowmobiles are going around 80+ MPH with the skier in tow. This year, we could see rocks and bare ground up there.

Shot of the Gakona Glacier from above. It is about 1400' drop just 2' away from where I took the picture.

Me taking a selfie while on the safe part of another glacier (College) and the last shot is the top of the College Glacier.

Nice pics! It's nice to have snow, even if it's like concrete!

Oh well, we can dream of those bottomless powder days!!

Not sure of the skiers slowed themselves down this year or not. The track was very hard pack and dangerous. Dangerous enough to have a lot of people scratch from it. Looking at the times for the first leg, it looks like they are faster than average, but not the fastest.

Typical year we usually get about 30 male skiers, 15 male boarders. 15 female skiers, and about 20 female boarders.

This year is was 11, 8, 2 and 3, respectively.

Always a good time down there. While the attendance this year was probably half of what it normally is, it was still very busy.

That's pretty amazing. I've been up to about 50MPH on skis before and that feels really fast. 70+ has to be pretty intense.

Bridge is a foot bridge used in the summer for hiking up into the glaciers. Once over this bridge, you can get to the heads of at least 3 different glaciers, a 4th one might take a bit to get to, but possible.

Not sure when it was built, but it is maintained.
