Hello guys. New to this Forum. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a 2005 Polaris switchback 600. been trying to get the electric start working. Has a brand new battery with 12.6 volts according to my voltmeter. just installed brand new starter thinking it was that. turn the key and nothing. not even a click from the solenoid. I have same voltage to the solenoid but nothing from solenoid to the starter ( mind you I didn't turn key at same time to check but solenoid makes no noise). was going to replace the solenoid but concerned that it wont work. Could it be the ignition switch? any way to test the solenoid? any help would be great. thanks
You could jumper across the two big wires of the solenoid or jumper from the battery to the starter to see if it turns over. I would suspect the solenoid if I had voltage coming to the solenoid and none coming out. You should also have voltage on the small wire when the key is turned to start, too. If there is no voltage to the solenoid from the small wire, the switch can't activate it to send electricity to the starter. The electricity from the small wire causes the solenoid to become magnetized, whcih closes the larger circuit inside. No electricity, the switch can't close.
Thanks for the help. I will test the small wire with the key turned over. If its the case of the small wire not getting voltage, what is the fix in your opinion for this?
Cheers
Most probable would be a wire broken or loose that is creating an open circuit. You will have to run the wires to check for cracks or breaks. My bet is on the solenoid, though. They do fail more frequently than the wiring (unless a mouse chewed through the wires!!)
Just replaced the solenoid on my 2015 Pro. Same exact symptoms. Checked continuity on all wires first and then borrowed a solenoid from a friend who just deleted his electric start system and that verified what we had suspected.
Boy howdy isn't that the truth. When I go to a parts store to find something that will work, I look for the oldest guy in there that has been doing parts for ages... often they can't run the computer very well, but they KNOW where the parts are and can often get you going!
Biggest thing would be to make sure mounting bolt spacing is same between your machine and the automobile one. Take yours into parts dealer. I paid around $38 excluding tax from Polaris Dealer out here. Parts Pit Stop has them for about $31 but shipping was $15.
There ya go!
Yeah Mike has helped me out every where he has worked!
He even found the fuel pump for my 95 Pantera!
Take it with you, as far as the mount, self tapper screws will work!
I've found my local NAPA can be good for the hard to find stuff. The guys have worked there for years and have seen quite bit of things over that time period.
