I have been riding my 00 RMK 700 with the stock steering height since I bought it 2 seasons ago. Now I want to put a riser on because I find I'm always hunched over and its especially difficult when trying to sidehill etc. I have a few questions. One question is what height is ideal. Right now when standing the handlebars are about at crotch height. Would 3 inch be sufficient? I also don't really want to have to extend any brake lines / cables etc. if I don't have to. Ive heard that at 3 inch I wouldn't have to extend anything. I'm not sure if this is true. I'll have to look further into it. One final thing that has stopped me from putting a riser on before is my snowmobile cover. Parking inside isn't an option for me so I need my cover. Anybody have any luck with fitted Polaris covers and risers. I Don't really want to spend money on another cover or modify my cover. Any input is appreciated.
Ok thanks for the reply guys. I've also heard of some people adding extra strength to the steering post when they put a riser on, especially on older machines. Do you think it's necessary in my case because it's not a very tall riser?
It's a good idea, as the stock setup isn't all that strong. Making it any longer will mean more leverage. More leverage means more force on that fairly weak part. Some guys put a rod down the steering column to stiffen it. There used to be a few other options on the Edge sleds that involved adding an extra bearing at the top of the column, but I don't know if that applies to the Gen II.
Here' s a link to another tread on here with the same topic and a few solutions..
Alright ya I've heard of the rebar/rod method. The only thing that put me off of that was I don't have access to a welder to fasten it to the steering post. Perhaps I'll have to sweet talk one of my welder friends into helping me out. I definitely want to do it right if I'm going to do it.
If your interested, I have what I believe to be either an aftermarket raised steering post or that of one that was done really well with reinforcement that I would make you a killer deal on. This is off a 99 chassis.
Down side is you need to remove the engine to replace the steering post, buts not all that bad. I have nothing on hand to compare lengths with, but it will be easy enough to with your existing post by simply measuring from the upper mount to the bar attachment.
Thanks for the offer but I already talked to one of my friends whose a welder. He's going to weld the reinforcement for me.
