Track Studs

I'm going to add studs to the Puma track this off season. I noticed quite a difference with the Jag (studded) and how it rode over the hard packed snow. Even with just 20 some-odd studs. I pulled the studs out of the outer track; I need to install the removed studs into the center of the track this off season; so I'll have 48 right down the center.

I've attached a pic of what Woody's said the sled needs. They say 54 for my 136" track? I was thinking 48?

Any alternatives to the "name brand" studs? I'm looking at $100 for just 48 studs..not including backers and nuts. E-bay? Amazon? Forum members?

Good point KC. The one swap meet I go to doesn't happen until the Fall.

But there is a guy I met there who parts out sleds near the weekend house. I could always reach out and see what he has.

KC,
I did some weighing..and math!

I used a Woody's stud I had pulled from the outer track on the Jag for these weights. And used my wife's digital kitchen scale to weigh them. Shhhhh! Don't tell her! I beleive these are .875 studs. They area just about 1.25" long from base to tip.

Full stud with backer plate and nylon nut: .875oz
Stud only: .625oz

Weight of 50 full studs (stud, backer, nut) 2.7lbs.
Weight of 50 studs only 1.9lbs.

I'd say less than a speedo n' tach!

So another thing to consider. If I go by the 1 stud per horsepower rule, I'd need about 34 for the Puma. What's the best way to do this? 1hp per stud or go by what the stud makers suggest?

I need to check my manual up north for what it says. I want to say they had a picture of only one stud between each tread on the track.

An easier way to determine what you need is to consider the type of riding you do along with the track size [lug height and track length] and the engine HP.

For a short track low lug sled with a 440 or less, 48 studs.
Short track low lug with 500/600 LC and aggressive rider, 96 studs down the center.

Lake racers of any size, 148 spread across the width of the track.

You can see where I am going with this and these are just minimum recommendations.

I'll take some pics of the Jag. That has 48...two between the paddles...but skipping a few in between. I removed all the studs from the outside of the track and I'll put those down the center. The Jag is a 121. Puma is a 136.

The original ripsaw was studded, came apart and took out my front heat exchanger. I vowed to never have studs again. Put on a new ripsaw and it takes off like it's studded. But I hear ya on stopping KC.....
