Okay thiers no 100% way to break in a motor no matter if you call Polaris, Yamaha, Arctic Cat everyone has different veiws can i get some of the opinions of you guys?
How i do it, ive broke in about 2-3 sleds since ive been riding they work great but any more techniques on what could help would be cool! What i normally do.
1. Start the sled run till the engine is somewhat warm shut off
(Repeat step 1 about 3-4 times letting the engine cool between)
2. Than i lift the end up and run it for 1/8 - 1/4 throttle
(Shut off after engine is warm, repeat 2)
3. Get it up to the mtn. let it sit for 4-5 mins idling
4. Go easy on the gas for 1 maybe 2 miles
5. Than ride it like normal getting on the throttle alot more than normal
6. before you shut off let it sit for around 5 mins again
(I am NOT looking for criticism on how i break in my sleds)
Just how you guys do it thanks!!!
Thanks guys! (I would KC but theirs NO spot of oil injector for my cylinder walls theirs also no oil pump gears in my sled the owner before took them out)
If you have no oil pump then I would increase the oil ratio from 50-1 to 32-1, but only mix a couple of gallons!
Then once you have several miles on it, then top off will more mixed at 50-1
Premix 50:1 with injection to achieve about a 25:1 effective mixture ratio.
1 start, warm it up, bleed coolant if applicable. Cool fully. Re-torque head/base nuts, usually they are around 2-5 ft/lbs off from where the were before the heat cycle.
2 start, warm up fully, not letting sit at steady idle, instead burping it. Once warm, ride it.
The throttle is continuously moved, not being allowed to sit at a steady rpm or load throughout the entire break in period. First 25 miles are under 1/2 throttle. 25-50 miles no more than 3/4 throttle. From 50-100 miles, full throttle can only be used for no more than 5 seconds sustained. 100-150 miles, no more than 20 seconds sustained full throttle. After 150 miles, it is considered fully broken in.
I would just get it to where you are going to ride. Let it warm to operating temperature. Ride it up to 75% throttle at the most. You want to vary throttle position a lot of the time, to give the engine every possible situation. Run it this way for 500 miles, once you near 500 miles you can introduce full throttle. You definitely do not want to start the engine and turn it off like you and people have mentioned above. That is detrimental to longevity. I would do all your checks after you are done riding the first day.
Good idea but my party gets maybe 500mi in like 5-6 years so it's not really a option to do high Mi like alot of ppl recommend for how we ride. Also I disagree with introducing full at 500 miles that's to long no giving it full power to burn gunk and other things off. The heat cycles work better where I live, most dealers out here say the same thing heat cycle it (most rides where I live do like 80mi a year if that).. Good advice!
after 2 heat cycles and retorque, i took the sled down the street to an open farmer's field and beat the living #$^& outta it. 800 miles later and it's still a beast.
