Hey all,
I'v got a 1994 Arctic Cat Cougar 440 and it runs great, when it starts, Most of the time it starts within a couple pulls but sometimes there is no spark. It shouldn't be freezing somewhere because It was 38 degrees today. Not sure where to start. Sometimes I keep the sled outside. Thanks in advance.

Idk how to check what Kc is talking about. To check the wires inspect them closely to make sure there not cut and exposed etc... I haven't checked coils in awhile someone esle should be able to explain that

The easiest way to check them is to just disconnect them. There should be one connector for the TSS and kill switch.

Thanks,
I looked at those and they are very helpful. I will probably give that a shot later in the week. One last thought I had was that above the stator/recoil starter, ther is an opening about an inch long, could water be getting in their and shorting it out?

Not very likely either as the gap between the stator connections are typically an inch or more, which is a long ways for water to cause a short.

Most stators are fairly insulated and the only bare wire is in the connector outside the motor.

It is more likely to be the TSS. If that is not it, then I would start with the spark plug caps and work back from there.

You need to remove the unit from the shaft.
A couple of 4x4 pieces or similar will be helpful to support the movable sheave from underneath.
When you remove the keeper clip and slide the helix [ramps] off the shaft, pay attention to how much the inner part turns [pre-load] when it releases.
When you remove the spring, note which hole the spring is anchored in so you can put it back right.
There will also be some shims on the outer side of the ramp that you do not want to loose as these will be used in between the sheaves.
Note which ones are in the middle and their thickness, add or remove what you need to get the belt height needed.

The reason I wanted to loosen the belt is because it squeels when starting from a stop, the snowmobile creeps along because it is too tight and it makes it kind of hard to start because it is tight. It should be the right belt too. I got it from fleet farm. I looked in the belt lookup and I got the belt number that the book said for my snowmobile.

Thanks
