racing 440 vs. average sled
Im looking to buy a new sled and ive been coming across these racing 440 from ski doo and polaris. Im wanting to know how they compare to an average 600cc+ sled. Do they go faster? Are they less reliable?

Depending on how much it's modified it's probably faster than an average 600. If you're looking for reliability stay away from the modded race sleds...

Most factory sno-x sleds are set up and geared for short course racing, this makes them VERY fast out of the hole to about 60mph after that the performance falls off. My 98 MXZX 440 will be neck and neck with most stock 6 7 and 800cc sleds, to about a 150 feet then the bigger sled pulls away on the top end. These sled are super fun on the trails..........However If you buy one of these sleds make sure it has been converted to oil injection, my sled is still pre-mix so I have to carry oil with me EVERYWHERE!!!!! My 440 has 4800 miles on it and those are all trail miles, this sled is very reliable starts every time and I have had no problems.

the 440x revs are quick little buggers! my cousin has had a few and they ride them all over the place. put in the low comp domes and they run on pumpgas and the premix is a bit of a pain but the are fun to jump

Pre-mix would be a pain for trail riding, but if you converted to oil injection than it would be alright. They're light and quick and a heck of a lot of fun!

if my sled didnt have oil injection, i would feel safer riding it. cuz if the oil pump goes, the engine goes and im stuck out if the woods
premix is safer, dont have to worry about that breaking. less parts, less breakage.
did i mention its a whole 9-11 pounds lighter without oil injection? think about it, the oil resy and the pump. thats 2% ligher for a 500 lb sled

jetting is the main think, even with low comp heads and a fat pre mix and a fat mains. you have to pick your riding carefully. A friend of mine converted an 03 rev, low comp heads, 350's. he seized the motor. but it was 9c outside, and his air box fell of(5 sizes right there)
you have to be smart.

when i had my 00 mxz 600 i got spanked in a 660 ft drag race by a mxzx 440 in fact he beat just about eveyone. it was an organized race with brackets and he took 1st in the: 500stock ,500 mod,600 stock, and 3rd in the 600 mod. very impressive

my 86 srv 540 kept up with a 2002 or 2003 (non IQ)polaris 440 for 500 feet or so, runing a snox sled on te trails requires moey, new geats, trail conversion kit for motor (unless you wanna pay $35/5 gallons of gas), and im sure there is more to change to get a snox on the trail

yes re jetting is a must, however you will not need different plugs. you can still run br9eya.
you just need to be smart, no riding on really cold days!
