Are you looking to buy new or used? If you want to go both on and off trail, you want a crossover sled. That's the Crossfire (Cat), MXZ Renegade (Ski-doo), or Switchback (Polaris). These machines have more track than trail sleds for flotation, but less track than mountain machines so they don't suck on the trails. They also have a shorter lug than most mountain machines. In my area it seems like Switchbacks and SKSs (what the Switchback used to be called) are relatively popular around my area.
