Hi i have a 00 RMK 700 and I want to try to restore it as much as I can without spending a whole lot. I went and bought Mothers Aluminum Polish and a Powerball and did the tunnel and it looks amazing. Looks like a mirror now. Now I'm trying to see if i can get scuff marks out of the hood. They were on the machine when I bought it (I assume it was from trailering it with the cover on) It looks dull, kind of like the clear coat is rubbed off. I waxed my sled last year when I bought it and obviously the marks were still noticeable. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on how to possibly restore the shine. Is there some sort of polish or clear coat repair or anything that would possibly bring it back?
Any recommendations on what kind of clear coat? Brands? Would it be the same as an automotive clear coat even though it's a fibreglass hood. Also not sure what sandpaper to use, like 2000 grit wet? Sorry I'm a beginner when it comes to this.
Try some rubbing compound. That will remove some of the lighter scratches. You can apply it by hand to the areas that are scratched. Any brand will do; most of the big autoparts stores will have it in their detailing section. I'll apply it with an applicator, then use a microfiber cloth to remove it.
k thanks for all the replies. Im gonna try some rubbing compound tomorrow. I know on my fibreglass boat I had thought the clear coat as rubbing off but it was badly oxidized. I just used marine oxidization remover and it came out with a near showroom shine after i waxed it. I don't really think this is oxidized but it may be worth a shot. Also what is the difference between rubbing compound and oxidization remover? Is there much difference?
If you decide to re-clearcoat make sure to use something to remove all of the silicon residue from your wax. I would use the gray scuff pad instead of sanding.
