Hi everyone, i own a 1992 Polaris Indy 650 with the stock rear suspension. The suspension works but it will shake your teeth loose in the rough stuff. Putting a different suspension in it is out of the picture as I have no money to put into it. I can live with it the way it is now but i was wondering if anyone knew of some DIY mods you could do to these suspensions to make them better. Thanks in advance

I had a 1990 Indy 650, and you are spot on; that thing would beat your fillings out of your teeth!

What I did in search of a better ride was replace both front and rear shocks (mine were shot) and both front and rear springs, and made sure all the cross shafts in the rear suspension were smooth and would move freely. There was some improvement, but I never did get the kind of ride quality you would get in a sled with a better suspension. Lots of guys put xtra-10 suspensions in the older iron to keep 'em on the snow. The older the sled gets, the more difficulty you will have in finding new parts.

I would start with a disassembly of the rear just to make sure there is no binding. Make sure you take lots of pictures as you take it apart to be able to get it back together again. It's a bit of a challenge if you don't, as the exploded diagrams aren't that great at telling you exactly how things were!
