So far my brother and I have been riding together twice this year. Both times his tether worked itself off and killed the machine. He doesn't even clip it to himself so it's not that useful, so we were wondering if there's a way to disable the tether, and if so is it not recommended for any reason?

Just get another tether cord. The rubber piece wears out after a while and gets loose. I wouldn't disable it, if nothing else if you ever sell it.
