Bone headed moves

This thread will be for all of our snowmobile bone headed moves. I hope I’m not the only one. I’ll start.

Yesterday I was riding my sled up and onto my trailer. I didn’t stop in time do to ice on the trailer and a little too much speed. The ski tips went through the rear windshield of my wifes hatchback (subaru outback). Luckily I have full glass coverage.

Next.

I forgot to put the pad lock in my hitch lever thing and the hitch popped off and i drove around dragging my trailer by the chains. Also i once forgot to put the pin back in the tilt and drove 2 hours home. Luckily the pin was on my bumper right where i left it!

I was working on my sled at my parents, forgot I didn't have the back end raised up (talk about stupid), and nearly sent the sled through the back of the garage ... no damage to the sled, but I did have to fix the siding on the garage tho (never thought a small bump could do that* much damage to the house)

when i was in high school i had a 72 ski doo TNT 440 fan cooled, always started great, choke it hold the throttle wide open, pull it over, then release the throttle and take the choke off. well one day i got on early in the morning (to me) and did my routine, should have known the throttle was a bit harder to pull than normal, well it startd as usual and when i took the choke off.... WHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA WIDE OPEN TAKIN OFF!!!! well i had ahold of the brke, still powering on heading twards the house next door, draggin me along, i tried everything i could but couldnt get to anything, i was just hanging on laying on the sled, then when it got close to the house i let go, i had enough momentum that when it hit and climbed up the side of the house i slid into the back of the track, still spinning wide open! NOW FOR THE BAD PART....... i jumped up and shut the thing down, it was aweful noisy still...... it had hit the gas meter, crushed it and tore the pipe out from under the ground, was lucky we all didnt blow up!! lets just say ther were not too many happy campers that day.......

Last year I was riding down a trail a couple days after buying my sled. Didn't realize my dad, who was in front of me, had stopped and I was in the process of having my brake hand off the handlebars. That was a new front bumper for me and $100 of welding and painting for the other sled's tunnel.

Fortunatly I learned a pretty valuable lesson and didn't have to pay too much for it.

Mine was more of a learning experience, at least that's what I call it

I found an XCR for sale less than a mile from my house. so I figured I'd go check it out. I wasn't looking for a triple, but the price was right and my hunt for a twin was coming up empty. I rode it around the guys yard for a while and making sure everything including the reverse then I paid the man. It was early January with plenty of snow on the ground, but I still had to trailer it home after I bought it since there was very little snow on the edge of the road. My father in law has a drive on-drive off trailer and lives close by so he came over after a phone call. We got it loaded up and headed for my house. The way my driveway is makes it hard for the truck/trailer to get into a position to allow a sled to be driven off the front. My father in law asks,"it has reverse, right...then back it off the trailer"

Sounded like a great idea, I didn't know any better. I jump on and proceed to back slowly down the ramp. I had the brake on and let myself back slowly down the ramp. Once the track hit the ground, I got off and pulled it the rest of the way down. I ran in and got my helmet and gloves for a quick ride around my 10 acres. I flip the lever over to forward and the sled moves about 3 feet and stops. Motor was revving but the sled wasn't moving. I shut it down and drug it into the garage. I narrowed the problem down to a broken chain. I ran over the flap when I backed it down the ramp. That little mistake cost me a complete new chaincase.... housing, cover, all gears with reverse, chain, tensioner, bearings, and seals....and I missed the first big ride of the year.

Learning experience...

i was riding my old '88 cougar 500, doing laps around a field, i was doing about 60 and the end of the field was coming and i decided that instead of slowing down i would try to take the turn at 60. knowing that it would flip if i just turned the bars i put both feet on the left running board, it was a left turn, to counter balance the sled. well i got leaning out there a ways and about 70 yds before the end of the field i hit a bump odd and fell off! it didn't feel like i was sliding that fast so i tried to stand up, i was sliding pretty fast, that just changed my position to sliding against my head. it was a good thing i wa wearing my helmet! there was a trench about 40tds long where i slid. the sled rolled to stop about 10 yds from the hedge-row.

another time this year i was doing wheelies with my 440, i was kneeling about where the storage comparment is, it hooked up better than i expected it too and i fell clear off the back. everything was fine, i was just surprised a little.

I just pulled this one today

riding on a trail and the wind had blown up a big drift and I thought no problem and took it it was only like 2 feet high once i got to the other side it was about a ten foot drop and I wouldve been okay maybe but I ran it strait into a boulder threw me off and the sled went down the rest of the hill after bouncing of the boulder and went right into a ditch and got stuck. after throwing down my helmet it took me an hour to get it unstuck by myself once I got that done I picked up my helmet which I then found out the face sheild was broken I guess it was just a bad day

I'm glad to hear that all of us do something where we can walk away and say "that was dumb" and laugh after the fact.

Last year's annual trip, my friend was pulling his sleds on the trailer behind his truck. He was following me. I just so happened to look in the rear view mirror to see his truck, then his trailer at a 90 degree angle to it! The tilt pin fell out and it tilted up, swung over to the left, caved the left side of his truck bed in, then went back to the right into the ditch. One sled broke free of the hold downs and flipped off the trailer, it went into the ditch and broke the windshield, hood, etc. Oh yeah, and he was BORROWING the sled...one year old. Thank god we were going about 25 at the time. If we were on the highway it would have been a LOT worse...
