A couple of years ago, I was going for the first ride of the year with my son and son-in-law. We were going ditch banging in ND. I was third in line, and my sled started bogging after a couple of miles, so I got way behind. It started running better, so I pinned it to catch up. All of a sudden my shield fogged up, so I raised the shield up just as I hit an approach going about 60. The compression caused my butt to fly off the sled, so I'm doing a one armed superman about 20 feet up in the air. I can clearly remember the horrified look on a lady's face in a car coming from the other direction. I managed to get back on the sled with both hands on the handlebars before landing(like I meant to do it). A second after I landed, something black hit me in the back of the head. Good thing I was wearing a helmet, it was my tool pouch. It had popped out of my glove box from the force of the compression going up the approach, flown over the approach and hit me in the back of the head when I landed. Only damaged was a broken shield on my helmet from the landing.

OK,

It's been a month since someone pulled, or told a bone headed move story. I think we can keep this thread going until the end of time if we are all honest. Lets here some more.

Well when at Tog last weekend I thought it would be fun to hit this nicely covered rock and get some big air....Unfortunately the ground crumbled and left me with a 6 ft wide ditch that bronco'ed me off at about 50.....I have a fractured nose and broken face shield and three huge scrapes in my helmet....

Leaving the trail looking like a bloody murder scene .....priceless...

Ok my first ever bonehead on a sled....

Back in ny in my youth roughly 12 years or so ago I built a highly modified 1979 Arctic Cat Jag. Motor was a mix of parts form numerous sleds that came out to roughly a 5-600 fan (who the hell really knows at this point). I restored and built this sled out to damn near mint condition I have pictures in 1995 this sled looked like brand new. Suspension was modified and gave me a bit more clearance but not much... Anyway we were out on the maiden voyage my friend and i about 12 miles from home the sled just dies in a field.

To get to our riding area we had to go under a giant culvert running under a highway. Which in turn funneled the snow into a massive mound infront of it.

So sleds dead i been yankin the cord for 20 minutes finally it starts...Well Im all fogged in the mask so my eyeglasses are in my pocket.....(See where this is goin)

So were crankin to get back speedo said 70 realistically 50s somewhere and then I feel it (FWHOOOOOOOSH) the groun lifts from under me.....I am now paralell with the height of the highway I can see cars....Mind you this tunnel is bing enough for a combine tractor to go under and I was above it....

We clear the upper edge of this culvert by maybe 6 inches and the sled lands and moves like its on rails...Never a hiccup nothing....

My friend says dude I was screamin didnt ya hear me..I was like what dont ya like big air??????? And off we went no damage just one heck of a story wish I had pictures it was one of the coolest feelings when I didnt see it coming...

BTW I put the glasses on when I landed....

I just remembered one that I still haven't told my dad about, to this day.

I took my dads truck to pick up a buddys sled. He was a ways up the highway lookin for some deeper snow but kept overheating because the snow conditions were so low. I got to the gravel road where he had parked his sled, and began looking around for plowed snow berms, small hills, anything we could use to load the sled into the pickup.

I was 16 or 17 at the time and we couldn't lift the 680 Ultra very easily. And since the snow conditions were so low, no-one had plowed up enough snow anywhere to aid our attempts.

We drove down the road a little ways to find a hill that the road cut through, leaving a nice slope right beside the road. We backed the truck up to the hill, getting the tailgate about 8" from touching it. I figured we could inch the sled down the hill to the tailgate and grab the ski loops to pull the sled onto the truck.

The hill was about 30' tall, so I drove the sled to the top and turned it back towards the tailgate. I tried to inch it towards the truck, but with the low snow and rocks and gravel underneath, the more I hit the brake the faster I went sliding towards the truck.

My buddy who was poised to grab the ski loops dove off of the truck, and I held on and hoped for the best.

I managed to get one ski on top of the tailgate as the sled slammed into the truck, but the other ski went under, poking a nice hole in my dads flat rear spoiler. (Thats what he gets for not having a "real" bumper ) And I do a nice little flip over the handlebars and into the bed to the truck.

Luckily no sled parts were damaged, and my dad never said anything about the rear spoiler. (I think he may have thought that he did it) And my buddy just laughed and laughed. He said I looked like I was having a seizure when I panicked and flew over the bars.

I have to admit I have had more than my fair share of snowmobile related bonehead moves. One of the stupidest was: I was in high school at the time I had mid 90's MXZ (no studs <---this is key). Well we had a day off school because of a big ice storm. I was riding up and down the road and I figured out if you got going about 40 mph and slam the brake, throw your weight, and turn the skis you could spin 180 degrees. Then I add on another step. I would turn the 180 degrees and then I would hit the gas and that would spin me another 180 degrees and you could keep going. Well I keep adding more and more speed. Well the last time I did it (about 60-65) I caught a patch of gravel that wasn't iced over and then the fireworks started. I got launch and the machine started barrel rolling. Blowing off the windshield, hood, seat, and everything that wasn't bolted down. It looked like something from a blooper videos. Need less to say it was an expensive half hour.

My friend and I were riding up near Pittsburg, NH and we found a sand pit. A small one, but they are still fun.
One of the runs was to run through a tight berm, and mash it for the jump. We had hit it a few times, and by then I had caught him. So, stupid me, I decided to tap the brake in the middle of the berm. Come to find out the brakes worked pissah good, and the next thing I knew I was ass over teakettle and I had a running board pinning me down.......on my neck. I think
Here I am, head stuck in the snow like an ostrich, laughing my ass off until I move a little to try and free myself, but helmet was apparently keeping the sled in check. I will wait since I still had an airway and consciousness.
Ok, where the hell are you, Dale???? Hell of a friend he for waiting so long to save me!!
He finally stops waiting for me to jump, and he peers over the hill to find me kicking my leg, while laughing his ass off. Good thing that was the days before cell cams!

I still catch hell for this one.

Guess I'll add one now...

Last year, shortly after the lakes frooze over here, Decided since there was very little snow on the trails, I would do a little lake riding and head back to a "friends" house..

Well took off across the lake, a few miles across, Heading stright out, and had it about 3/4 throttle. Well half way there, loud BANG! and then sled starts to die and stop. No restart, just a the clank sound. (sounded just my doo did the year b4 when I cracked a rod)

So, grab my little gear and head out across the lake, thinking I blew the motor (again). well get the bar on the other side, talking with some other sledders and after a few mins, bunch of us decided to go tow it back.

We get out there six sled in all, all parked around the sled, and get ready to hook up the tow rope and I though, heck better take the belt off make it a little easier to pull. Well in the darkness I notice, Hey I have no belt! turns out was spinning the track to much and blew the belt!

Felt like a idiot! once we got it towed back, replaced belt and let it sit for a little while she came out of limp mode (was a efi thank god, saved my motor) and she ran great!

Careful, Dennis, those 2 things don't mix very well. I lost 2 friends (brothers) a few years back & I cringed when I read that. We need you around for the MI ride, my friend!!

Okay off the subject a bit but here goes I was riding my brand new polaris predator 500 quad and was showing off for the camera man and went to do a donut and ended up rolling it over on on its side and taking off all the plastic of the right side. When it stopped the camera man was saying your alright as I was still sitting of the seat and holding on. LOL.

Last febuary six of us left our local establishment and i thought it would be a good idea to jump a snowbank (no harm in that) well what i did not notice was that the bank was almost straight up. when I hit it I must have hit the throttle and launched into orbit. on my re-entry to earth my right foot was still locked in and skis pointing up and to the left. Hit the ground with my A@@. As i was getting up 2 kids in a car stopped and said "Dude that was cool! are you ok?" Oh yea and i got back on and tried to start it back up. couldnt pull it over so my buddies got her goin and i rode 2 miles back to my shop. 3 days later went to the Hosp and they said i broke my pelvis. worst pain i ever felt. Got the X-rays in a frame along with some other bone head moves. By the way the sled was ok but i sold it anyway and bought a new rev. But im back and got 380 miles on as of today and headed up to mercer wi as soon as i finish this. They all run great on miller Gutter man

<----Bonehead #1

Well my bonehead move is not as funny as most of these but here goes. Last year while riding off trail in the Yuper area I was second in line to ride up this small (but steep) 20' hill. The guy in front of me made it up just fine so I started to go and I must have whimped the throttle in the beginning so just as my skiis started to crest the top of the hill I lost all forward momentum and my track started to spin, so like an idiot I jumped off my sled instead of riding it down. The sled slid down the hill perfectly until the very end when the skiis started to turn, anyways the sled rolled over on top of the windsheild spun 180 degrees and then rolled over again so it was back on it's skiis. All that happened was the windsheild cracked. I didn't fix it I just traded the sled in on a newer one.

I got a new one...

This past weekend I was up near Ossipee Lake with a couple buddies doing some powder runs. Long story short I blast through a deep mud pit I couldn't see until I was in it, my ski catches on something, next thing you know I'm airborn finally landing on my back on the other side of the pit. I'm thinking "Whew, I think I'm ok"...Then I start to sink. I end up covered in mud from head to toe. Well, I brush myself off as best I can and check the sled for damage. It looks good, nothing visible wrong, starts first pull, but when I give it throttle it bogs and won't go. At this point my buddies have come back and immediately see me covered in crud and start belly laughing. On top of that, I'm like yeah, yeah, haha, I fell in mud, real funny but my sled won't go-WTF? In between wiping tears away, my buddy says, "You filthy idiot, the key came out". I look down and sure enought he key is in the ignition, but the DESS is hanging off. He walks over, plugs it back in, and the sled fires up like new which causes them both to burst out into more laughter for another 20 minutes. I was pissed

Ok, I've got one. A about a week or two ago I was unloading our two snowmobiles from our trailer while my dad was getting ready. We have one of the clam shell tilting trailers or whatever you call them.

It had snow the night before too so there was some snow on top of the trailer making it quite a bit heavier than usual. So, I stared up the F6 and was backing it slowly off the trailer to try and make it tilt down.

Well, it tilted down and it tilted down fast, and as it came down the cover part of the trailer came down too. So, I slid backwards on the sled and almost got crushed between the cover and the handle bars. Luckily I got on the brakes so the sled didn't slide back far enough to seriously hurt me.

So, I put it in forward gear drove it up on the trailer, put on the parking brake and got out of the trailer. And, this whole time, the trail is still tilted up because the my dad's sled has slid back and was holding the back end down.

Dumb mistake # 2- The handle bars had hit the bottom of the cover and that's what had stopped the sled and was keeping it on the trailer. So I got on and tried to lift up the cover but it was jammed with the force of the snomobile on it. Here's where I went worng, I started the snowmobiled not noticing that the throttle was hitting the trailer cover and was about half open. When I started ot the sled jumped forward about 2 feet. Lucky for me the trailer was tilted up so it didn't get enough momentum to do anything. If it was down though it could has caused some serious damage to the front of the trailer.

Well, luckily nothing bad happened and I now have a much safer method of unloading the sleds.
