Question Race options

Been a long time since I was on a sled - 98 or so - but back then I ran a ZR 440-studded and the Black Majic twin pipes on it - loved it. Had the knob for bias front and rear (ski pressure vs track)

Anyway I am putting the toes in the water with the wife on a new sled. I would also like to do some racing.

Now don't get me wrong - snow cross is cool and all and drags are neat but neither trip my trigger in the "participation" category.

I was wondering if there is any such thing as long distance point to point racing or possibly large loop racing -- think something like Marquette MI to the Soo or something -- or a race from Green Bay, WI to Wausau and back - something like that.

Any such animal?

Also - back then IIRC - the sno-pro was offered to registered racers only. Is this still the case as the 440 engine - easy on insurance and really quite fast - particularly in the woods. Many's a larger sled that was flat out stomped on in the trees my my "lowly" 440.

You are right about the 440s being only sold brand new to people in the race program. You can find newer 440s that are trail converted, check out your post in the Cat forum.. I know that there are cross country races but couldnt tell you if there are any near you.

I dont know about Cat, but you have to be a racer to get a Polaris 440 IQ.
For long-distance point to point racing, there are lots of enduro races. They have the Soo 500 as well as the I-500 and the Irondog (the Irondog is in Alaska though, not sure if you wanna go for that one).
I personally follow enduro more than sno-x. A friend of mine is a semi-pro sno-x racer and sno-x is cool to watch, but to me enduro more accurately recreates the conditions that the average snowmobiler rides in. Even on Sunday afternoon the trails that I ride on dont have any 50' jumps.
Best o' luck to ya.
