the 380 engine by can am (formerly known as the 377 bombardier) has been around a long time, i know it's a decent engine but can you beef it up? what about bigger carbuerators? after market exhaust? intake? anything? I'd donate MY balls but id rather see if i can give it some on its own.

My 1996 Mach Z 780 needed a top-end rebuild. When I took off the cylinder head, I noticed that the middle combustion chamber has some pitting and also what looked like melted piston on it. The sealing surface is clean obviously with no markings.

I took out the Dremel and lightly sanded down the imperfections and now only have some pitting. It came out really nice and is smooth to the touch, but will this not work?

I dont care if I loose a little performace, I just want to make sure its safe for the engine, and will run right.

Thanks,
Is the secondary clutch pretty much done for since it has no adjustment left(sheive width)?

Is there any spots of excessive wear i should look at...?
what lube/grease do you use to lube the jackshaft and driveshaft bearings?

1991 Indy 500 running issues.

I have a 1991 Indy 500 that started giving me problems a few years back then quit running and then I moved and it sat for a few years and now I am...

I have a 1991 Indy 500 that started giving me problems a few years back then quit running and then I moved and it sat for a few years and now I am trying to get it running again and not going so good.

First when I first started having issues I was getting some popping/backfiring out of the carbs and it would loose power like crazy then all of a sudden come back and one day I couldnt get it to start for nothing and about that time is when it went into storage while I was getting ready to move and then I brought it home where it sat for a few more years due to the lack of snow we had gotten.

I am trying to get it back up and going now but not having much luck. I am guessing the backfiring from the carbs was a coil issue. Is there any way to test the coil/s?

Also, I was able to get it running after somewhat but it wont stay running. I either have to have the choke on and never let off the throttle or sometimes it will run but not idle without the choke but mostly with the choke on. It also will flood out and foul the plugs in no time. It also runs kinda rough and is really low on power.

I am thinking of just finding some coils and put on there and see if that helps but would like to know if thats the issue first. Also, wondering if the stator would cause this also.

Any help would be great before I take it into the dealer and have em fix it and I dont really want to do that.

First, let me start with im VERY mechanically inclined. VERY.
So im not afraid of a large, and hard project. thats what i live for.

and ive owned pretty much every playtoy on the market. quads, street bikes, boats, cars, trucks, go karts, waverunners, jet ski's. whatever, etc. You name it. I've had it.

But its time for me to expand to the only toy i havnt got to touch yet. A snowmobile :) and with the extremely early winter were getting already. Its got me jumpin to try something new.

and ill be up front, i know jack squat about sleds. So im sorry for any noobness in advance!!

2nd, please dont suggest i go find a good used running one or something like that. If i have the 1-3 grand in cash spare right now, i wouldnt be posting this thead, id be out riding a nice sled. But im in the process of buying a house. im FLAT ass broke.

But I just found a 97 arctic cat Jag DLX on my local craigslist for sale for $200 bucks. Which is a price i can live with and afford at this time. Machine looks gorgeous, been well cared for, but the motor went tits up. its a 440cc air cooled.

I called the guy to see what he had to say about it.

First thing he told me was he stole the chain case off it when it died and used it on another sled.
5 minutes on google for me, and it doesnt look like to big of a deal. Im asumming its really not? how expensive are these on average? i havnt taken the time to price check it yet.

Next he told me the piston totally blew apart, so thats the main issue with the motor and what put it out of commission. He said he wouldnt suggest rebuilding it. But I always like to get my own opinion on that. If its not to bad, and the sleeves are in okay shape. im just going to hone it out, drop in a weisco piston kit, and GO!

BUT, if it really is a toast motor and has no hope. I have a few questions.
Next i appologise, im sure there are lots of threads like this with the same questions. But i just dont have the time to browse right now. So a nice helpfull answer would be much appreciated :)

How difficult are Bigger motor swaps in these?
what abou swapping to a Liquid cooled motor?
And how hard/cheap is it to just find another running 440 motor?

i have no idea how these things operate under the hood, but once i finally get my head underone im sure ill figure it out. So im curious how easy it is to get maybe a different brand of motor in there.

And finally...

And thing special i should look for when i go to check this sled out here tomorow or the next day? Specifially anything in the drivetrain, or whatnot? Give me the noob advice i need it! lol Thanks a lot guys.

I have an '02 polaris edge 600, never had a single problem with it. I went to start it to make sure it would be ready to go when the white stuff came and was pretty disappointed. It will fire if I clean the plugs and run for just a few seconds until it floods out. When I pull the plugs out, they're completely drenched. I thought my floats were stuck open so I pulled the carbs and cleaned everything out which was all in great condition. Does anybody know what would cause it to completely flood out like this? Thanks!!
