1996 Polaris Ultra SP Water Pump Oil Loss

Hello. I own a 1996 polaris ultra sp. I bought the sled with a leaking water pump. After removing and inspecting the pump, it seemed that the pump seized due to lack of oil. I purchased a remanufactured pump, installed it and filled to the top of the sight glass with 0w40 4 stroke oil. After a 30 mile ride last Wednesday, I inspected the oil level through the sight glass. The oil level was down. I added more oil to the pump and went on a long ride yesterday. After the first 20 miles the oil level was down again. I had to add oil every 20 miles. I suspect the oil is leaking past the seals that are on each side of the drive gear for the pump on the crankshaft. If the seals are leaking, what are the repair options? Has anybody seen this problem before? Thanks in advance.

I did some research and cannot find seals. Just curious if anyone has run into this problem before? If so, any suggestions on where I might find replacement seals and what kind of project am I looking at to replace them? It looks like the crankshaft has to be removed and seperated to replace these seals.

Hi< I have come upon rebuilding the ultra 680 before and the 1996 model has seals to keep the ow40 oil into the water pump and the 1998 modle ultra ran wide open no seals but exact same water pump, so if you could remove your water pump and inspect the seals< jst tear out the old seals and run it wide open as the case fuel pressure will lubricate the ring gear of that drives the water pump alone< nice trick too less maintanance, and dont worry my 68PLO1 water pump hasn't failed me yet in over 2500 miles,

7000 miles Rick. Racing Kidd, wouldn't that require removing the crankshaft from the engine first? Looking at the parts diagram, to remove the seals, it looks like the crankshaft has to be taken apart. Is this correct?

Yes it is. It has it's own lubrication (not lubricated by the lower end like the 97 and 98 models)
